THE FOLLOWING MINUTES ARE SUBJECT TO MODIFICATION AND ARE NOT OFFICIAL MINUTES UNTIL APPROVED BY THE SPRING HILL PARKS ADVISORY BOARD Spring Hill Parks Advisory Board Meeting Minutes July 17, 2017 CALL TO ORDER Doug D’Albini called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL Present: Doug D’Albini Laila Reis Mark Squire Darrell Beck Absent: George Eshnaur Staff Present: Ryan Crowley, Parks Superintendent Meeting Attendees: None APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion by Laila Reis, seconded by Darrell Beck to approve the agenda. Motion carried. FORMAL BOARD ITEMS 1. Approval of Minutes: June 19, 2017 Darrell Beck would like to amend the minutes to remove the specified date of the Council Meeting for the design firm selection for Veteran’s Park, as it was not selected on that date. Darrell Beck would like to amend Announcements and Reports to identify himself as a citizen concerned with the design of the Veteran’s Memorial and not a representative of the American Legion. Motion by Laila Reis, seconded by Darrell Beck to approve amended Minutes. Motion carried. DISCUSSION 2. Final Review of the Recommendation to the City Council. The Board would like to add the Daffodil Days Questionnaire to the attachments. The formal recommendation will be made to the Council at the August 10th Council Meeting. 3. Fall Festival Event: Junkyard Treasures Contest. The City of Spring Hill has donated 3 family pool passes to the Spring Hill Aquatic Center for prizes. Ryan Crowley, Parks Superintendent, has discussed event recycling with Waste Management. There would be a cost for recycling. The Board instructed Mr. Crowley to investigate costs from Waste Management as well as Gardner Disposal. The information can be given to event coordinators in the hopes to encourage their participation in recycling at community events. a. Waste Management has provided a visual aid to assist with community education. Mr. Crowley will be making the brochure into a banner that can be used at various events. b. Waste Management will not be participating in Fall Festival or any after-hours activities. Board members may tour the facilities during regular office hours with an appointment. STAFF REPORTS  The City Council has selected Vireo design firm for Veteran’s Park.  City Park playground installation is currently underway to be completed by the end of July.  K-State Extension Office will be providing a seminar: Preparing for the Emerald Ash Borer in your Community. The seminar will take place August 16, 2017 from 1:00pm-4:30pm at the Preston Hale Room, Ward Meade Historic Site, 124 NW Filmore Street, Topeka, KS 66606. ANNOUNCEMENTS & REPORTS  Darrell Beck addressed the Board with proposed designs for the Veteran’s Memorial. OTHER BUSINESS  Mr. Squire would like to redefine short and long term goals for the Parks Advisory Board. Mr. Crowley suggested the Board be an instrumental part of assessing current City owned properties and work to make recommendations on future use of properties. Mr. Crowley will provide aerial views and dimensions of city owned properties at the next meeting. Mr. Squire feels the Parks Advisory Board should be more proactive in the future development and planning of green spaces. The Board would like to have a discussion with the Planning Commission regarding green space planning at their August 3rd meeting. Mrs. Davison will make arrangements for the Parks Advisory Board to be placed on the Planning Commission Agenda August 3, 2017. ADJOURN Motion by Laila Reis, seconded by Darrell Beck to adjourn.
