THE FOLLOWING MINUTES ARE SUBJECT TO MODIFICATION AND ARE NOT OFFICIAL MINUTES UNTIL APPROVED BY THE SPRING HILL PARKS ADVISORY BOARD Spring Hill Parks Advisory Board Meeting Minutes June 19, 2017 CALL TO ORDER Laila Reis called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL Present: Doug D’Albini Laila Reis George Eshnaur Mark Squire Darrell Beck Absent: None Staff Present: Ryan Crowley, Parks Superintendent Meeting Attendees: None APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion by Laila Reis, seconded by Mark Squire to approve the agenda. Motion carried 5-0-0 FORMAL BOARD ITEMS 1. Approval of Minutes: May 15, 2017 Motion by Mark Squire, seconded by Laila Reis to approve the Minutes. Motion carried 5-0-0 2. Recommendation to the City Council : The City of Spring Hill support an updated Parks Master Plan that would actively pursue the development of local trails and pathway connections by a combination of sidewalks, trails, bike lanes and subdivision development. Which would allow for potential partnerships for regional connections. Motion by Laila Reis, seconded by George Eshnaur to approve the recommendation. Motion carried 5-0-0. DISCUSSION 3. Fishing Derby 2017 review. a. Donations and participation will be sought from outdoor stores such as Bass Pro, Cabela’s or Academy Sports. Vendors will be asked to supply any of the following: prizes, information on equipment or species identification. ii. Ryan Crowley will provide a review of past event activities before planning for 2018. 4. Ryan Crowley gave an update on recycling efforts for June 2016-2017 a. Waste Management reported on average 6.51 tons per week, annual estimate 340 tons. b. Ripple Glass has received 34 tons of glass recycling since the containers placement in June of 2016. Thirty four tons of glass is the equivalent of 136,000 bottles and jars! This saves enough energy to power a television for five-and-a-half years. c. The Board felt strongly that there was more that could be done to educate about green practices. i. Ryan Crowley will contact Waste Management for informational brochures or posters as well as ask Waste Management to participate in the Fall Festival with a booth of their own or in conjunction with the Parks Advisory Board booth. 5. Fall Festival Event preparation: September 30, 2017, Junkyard Treasurers contest, booth and parade participation were discussed. The board will continue their participation with the Junkyard Treasures contest and booth. a. Ryan Crowley will request prize donations from the City of Spring Hill. 6. Tree City USA growth award projects were discussed. The community will achieve a Tree City USA growth award by completing eligible activities totaling 10 points. The following categories were selected as possible activities to research further: a. (A6) Publicity b. (C4) Tree Inventory & Analysis c. (A2) Literature Distribution d. (C10) Local Award Program 7. The Parks Advisory Board will contribute to the City Newsletter quarterly by submitting an article that supports green living. a. Laila Reis will submit an article about recycling for July 2017. b. Mark Squire will submit an article in October 2017. STAFF REPORTS • The City Council will be selecting a design firm for Veteran’s Park. • City Park playground installation is currently underway. ANNOUNCEMENTS & REPORTS • Darrell Beck addressed the Board as a concerned citizen that would like to participate in the design of a Veteran’s Memorial to be located at Veteran’s Park. Mr. Beck requests location specifications and dimensions to begin their plan of the memorial. The Parks Advisory Board would like to thank the City for holding the event. ADJOURN Motion by Laila Reis, seconded by Darrell Beck to adjourn. Motion carried.
