STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, March 6, 2012 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI

Members Present: Josephine Berthet, David Bollman, Jan Burns, Frank DiMaria,
Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Eboni LaMar, Donald Schinzing, John
Stampor
Members Absent: Maurice Batarseh, Ronald Bindle, Omie Brooks
Representing the City: Steve Guitar and Karen Kazmer
Vice Chair Donald Schinzing chaired the meeting.
COMMUNICATION FROM CITIZENS : none
PRESENTATION:
Pastor Michail Curro and Redelia McLaurine (both of the Interfaith Center for
Racial Justice) presented artwork to be considered for the Artist of the Month
program. High school students in Macomb County participated in an art contest
to celebrate the “50th Anniversary Freedom Ride”; winning artwork was displayed
at the MLK celebration in February. The MLK High School Traveling Art Exhibit
is being displayed at different municipalities throughout Macomb County.
Motion to allow the MLK High School Traveling Art Exhibit as the April 2012 Artist
of the Month made by Frank DiMaria.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES :
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the January 3, 2012 Cultural
Commission made by Frank DiMaria

AGENDA ITEMS :
A. Memorial Day Parade
$9,550 has been received in donations for the Memorial Day Parade;
six bands have sent in applications to participate in the parade.
Steve Guitar reported Henry Ford Hospital would sponsor the Michigan
First Fife & Drum Corps.
B. Sterlingfest
One artist has volunteered to be on the sub-committee for pre-jurying
of artist applications.
22 artist applications have been received as of date.
C. Artist of the Month
Four artist of the month applications were reviewed.
Michael Peychich will be May 2012 Artist of the Month.
Kenneth Pilarski will be June 2012 Artist of the Month.
Jessica Montgomery will be July 2012 Artist of the Month.
Jim Williams will be October 2012 Artist of the Month.
OLD BUSINESS:
Donald Schinzing inquired of the money received through the Oracle
fundraiser. To date $1,377.14 has been raised. Schinzing said the
commission committed to raise $4,000 to cover the cost of Oracle and we
need to act now to fulfill our responsibility.
Guitar reported that $5,184.33 remains in the Cultural Commission’s
Sculpture escrow account, but monies cannot be transferred from that
fund at this time.
David Bollman stated he would contact Sterling Heights high school art
departments to coordinate a project which would have art students
produce a piece of art to be displayed at Teenfest and Sterlingfest. Steve
Guitar will set up a meeting with UCS and invite David to have this project
implemented. David also suggested an area at Teenfest be designated for
participants to create a mural. Steve Guitar will speak with Parks &
Recreation regarding this suggestion.
NEW BUSINESS:
Margaret Frontiera distributed Sterlingfest artist applications for our 2012
show at the Henry Ford High School craft show in February. An artist who
makes dog treats approached Margaret with an interest in participating in
Sterlingfest.
Motion to allow artists, who make homemade food, into 2012 Sterlingfest,
as part of a pilot program to this event. Any accepted, juryied-in vendors
of this category will be grouped together in the artist line-up of Sterlingfest.

Motion to adjorn the Cultural Commission meeting at 7:33 p.m. made by
Margaret Frontiera.
