STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, April 3, 2012 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Conference Room 202, 6 p.m. Members Present: Josephine Berthet, Ronald Bindle, David Bollman, Jan Burns, Frank DiMaria, Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Eboni LaMar, Donald Schinzing Members Absent: Maurice Batarseh, Omie Brooks, John Stampor Representing the City: Steve Guitar and Karen Kazmer Vice Chair Donald Schinzing chaired the meeting. COMMUNICATION FROM CITIZENS : none APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the March 6, 2012 Cultural Commission made by Frank DiMaria Seconded by: Eboni LaMar Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS : A. Memorial Day Parade  Sara Osman has agreed to serve as a representative for the family of SSGT Ergin Vedat Osman. SSGT Osman will serve as “Honorary Grand Marshal” of the 2012 Sterling Heights Memorial Day Parade.  Steve Guitar stated many volunteers would be needed for the parade. Mr. Guitar announced the retirement of Joe Sturza of the Community Relations Department. Mr. Sturza is in charge of the organization of the parade; volunteers are needed in many areas, especially the line- up of politicians. Jan Burns stated her husband might be willing to volunteer for the politician line-up; Mrs. Burns will confirm after Mr. Burns’ schedule is reviewed.  Steve Guitar has been in contact with the contractor in charge of the work being done on Dodge Park Road to ensure the road is not obstructed on Memorial Day.  Steve Guitar suggested the Cultural Commission consider entering into a contract with Pzazz Entertainment for stilt-walkers at the Parade. Members suggested the possibility of securing a sponsorship for this participation. Motion to secure a contract with Pzazz Entertainment for stilt-walkers at the 2012 Sterling Heights Memorial Day Parade, May 28, 2012; contract would be for up to two hours, $300 total, for a stilt-walker dressed in a patriotic costume, made by Eboni LaMar. Seconded by Frank DiMaria Ayes: all Nays: none B. Sterlingfest  Sub-Committee Report  Jan Burns reported the committee is working on a community service project for teens in Sterling Heights high schools. Teens would draw on a piece of material (the material is yet to be determined), the best pieces of artwork would then be combined together and displayed during sponsored events of the city of Sterling Heights. Mrs. Burns and David Bollman will work with art teachers in high schools of Warren Consolidated and Utica Schools.  Members of the sub-committee will work with a select group of artists to review Sterlingfest artist applications before the members of the Cultural Commission jury applications for this year’s Sterlingfest. Members of the sub-committee: Josephine Berthet, David Bollman, Jan Burns, Grace Finazzo and Eboni LaMar.  The Cultural Commission will jury artist applications at the May 1st meeting; printed copies of photographs of artwork will be presented in categories to members for selection of artists. C. Artist of the Month  Judith Anderson applied for the Artist of the Month program. Artwork accepted must be an original design and not from a kit. Per this stipulation, the Cultural Commission did not accept the application from Ms. Anderson as Artist of the Month. NEW BUSINESS:  Donald Schinzing thanked Ronald Bindle for attending in the Artist of the Month presentation. Thank you also to Grace Finazzo on her assistance with the MLK Traveling Exhibit. Motion to adjorn the Cultural Commission meeting at 7:20 p.m. made by Margaret Frontiera. Seconded by: Grace Finazzo Ayes: all Nays: none
