STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, May 1, 2012 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI
48313, Conference Room 202, 6 p.m.
Members Present: Maurice Batarseh, Josephine Berthet, Ronald Bindle, David
Bollman, Jan Burns, Frank DiMaria, Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Eboni
LaMar, Donald Schinzing, John Stampor (arrived at 7 pm)
Members Absent: Omie Brooks
Representing the City: Steve Guitar and Karen Kazmer
COMMUNICATION FROM CITIZENS :
Judith Anderson presented a sample of her artwork (needlepoint and copper
tooling) for consideration for the Artist of the Month program. Ms. Anderson had
applied previously and was rejected due to criteria of acceptance is artwork must
be original. Ms. Anderson stated she had been selected as Artist of the Month in
2004; commission members stated criteria has since changed.
Motion to table review of Judith Anderson’s artwork for the Artist of the Month
program (to be displayed in May or June 2013) until January 2013 so that
Anderson can provide new original work for consideration – made by Margaret
Frontiera.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES :
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the April 3, 2012 Cultural Commission
made by Donald Schinzing.
Seconded by: Frank DiMaria Ayes: all Nays: none
AGENDA ITEMS :
A. Memorial Day Parade
A parade line up was distributed to commission members. Members
were requested to review line up and share any concerns with the
Community Relations Department by Friday, May 4th.
Ten bands have submitted applications for the Memorial Day Parade.
A meeting with all volunteers for the parade will be held the week prior.
Cultural Commission positions for the Memorial Day Parade:
Josephine Berthet & Frank DiMaria – scouts
Jan Burns & Margaret Frontiera – banner
Jan Burns & Grace Finazzo (with Karen Kazmer) – registration
Joe Burns (with Bill Driskell) – Elected Officials & Military line up
Eboni LaMar & husband –
Maurice Batarseh – opening ceremony
B. Artist of the Month
Two Artist of the Month applications were received.
Motion to postpone the review of two Artist of the Month applications
until June 5, 2012 Cultural Commission meeting made by Jan Burns.

C. Sterlingfest
Power point copies of applications received from artists applying for
Sterlingfest were provided for commission members to review and jury.
NEW BUSINESS:
Donald Schinzing thanked Ron Bindle and Eboni LaMar for attending and
assisting in the May 2012 Artist of the Month presentation. Thank you also to
Grace Finazzo for assisting the April 2012 Artist of the Month in preparing the art
display.
