STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, June 5, 2012 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Conference Room 202, 6 p.m. Members Present: Maurice Batarseh, Josephine Berthet, Ronald Bindle, David Bollman, Jan Burns, Frank DiMaria, Eboni LaMar, Donald Schinzing Members Absent: Grace Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, John Stampor Representing the City: Steve Guitar and Karen Kazmer APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the May 1, 2012 Cultural Commission made by Donald Schinzing. Seconded by: Eboni LaMar Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS: A. Artist of the Month  Commission members reviewed two Artist of the Month applications.  Correspondence will be emailed to John Mahoney requesting more samples of work before determination is made for acceptance as Artist of the Month.  Norman J. LaPrise will be the September 2012 Artist of the Month. B. Sterlingfest  105 artist applications have been received.  Three late applications were reviewed for acceptance into the fair. Ray Ruggeri, Mark Tario and Jim Cadwell were accepted into 2012 Sterlingfest.  City management is in discussion of the possibility of charging for parking at the 18 Mile & Utica lot and across Dodge Park Road.  Commission members will jury artist booths on Thursday, 7/26. A listing of artists, along with procedures for judging, will be emailed to members.  A sign up sheet for volunteering for the information booth will be emailed. C. Memorial Day Parade  Commission members selected best band and runner-up and best float and runner-up.  Best float: Collins Elementary; Runner-Up: American Polish Century Club  Best band: Henry Ford High School; Runner-Up: Ecorse High School  Revision of parade guidelines will be discussed at September 2012 meeting. Possibility of a listing of float ideas will be included on application.  The 60th Anniversary of the Korean War is 2013. James McCarthy has agreed to assist commission with securing a Korean War vet as grand marshal.  Commission members suggested a band not march near the Shriners; some members feel the Shriners have too many marchers/vehicles; members liked the stilt walker. OLD BUSINESS:  Steve Guitar stated a proposal to bid out the cleaning and maintenance of sculptures on city grounds will be written. David Bollman will assist with the preparation of the proposal.
