STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, June 4, 2013 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313,
Conference Room 202, 6 p.m.
Members Present: Maurice Batarseh, Josephine Berthet, Ronald Bindle, Frank DiMaria, Grace
Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Eboni LaMar, Jeanne Schabath
Members Absent: David Bollman, Jan Burns, Donald Schinzing, John Stampor
Representing the City: Steve Guitar and Karen Kazmer
Maurice Batarseh called the meeting to order at 6:10 p.m. Mr. Batarseh presiding over meeting
due to Chair & Vice Chair not in attendance.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the May 7, 2013 Cultural Commission made by Frank
DiMaria.
Seconded by: Josephine Berthet Ayes: all Nays: none
AGENDA ITEMS:
A. Sterlingfest
o Upton House Raffle
Commission members will be selling raffle tickets of the Upton House
painting in the beer tent. Tickets will also be available at the information
booth. Winner of the raffle will be announced on Saturday, 7/27, at 9 p.m.
on the stage in the Suds’n’Sounds tent.
Community Relations will make large signs of the painting to be displayed
at the info booth and inside the beer tent. 8 _ x 11 laminated sheets will be
available for members selling tickets.
Cash box will be in the Suds’n’Sounds tent.

Thursday 3-9 p.m. beer tent: Frank DiMaria
Thursday 5-9 p.m. info booth: Grace Finazzo
Friday evening hours beer tent: Jeanne Schabath
Friday 5-9 p.m. info booth: Grace Finazzo
Saturday 5-9 p.m. beer tent: Maurice Batarseh
Saturday: Eboni Lamar (available anytime)
Margaret Frontiera & Ron Bindle will call with availability.
Eboni LaMar arrived at 6:25 and presided over remainder of meeting.
o Josephine Berthet recommended a "save the date" for 2014 Sterlingfest be
included in the artist packets distributed on opening day of Sterlingfest.
o Josephine Berthet volunteered to assist on registration day.
o SterlingFast Run has been confirmed. Proceeds of profits from the run will be
split between the Oracle Fund and the Parks Endowment Fund held with the
Community Foundation.
B. Artist of the Month
o Motion to select Winnie Chrzanowski as December 2013-January 2014 Artist of
the Month made by Frank DiMara.
Seconded by Grace Finanzo Ayes: all Nays: none
C. Memorial Day Parade Review
o Maurice Batarseh questioned parade participants distributing coupons,
advertisements, etc. Cultural Commission will revise parade guidelines in the fall
of 2013.
o Cultural Commission reviewed a taping of all bands performing in the parade and
pictures of floats.
Motion to award Best of Show Band to Cass Tech Marching
Band made by Margaret Frontiera.
Seconded by: Grace Finazzo Ayes: all Nays: none
Motion to award Runner-Up Best of Show Band to
Sterling Heights High School made by Ronald Bindle.
Seconded by: Jeanne Schabath Ayes: all Nays: none
Motion to award Best Float to Collins Elementary made
by Maurice Batarseh.
Seconded by: Josephine Berthet Ayes: all Nays: none
Motion to award Runner-Up Best Float to Peach Festival
made by Ronald Bindle.
Seconded by: Grace Finazzo Ayes: 7 Nays: 1
Awards will be presented on Friday, June 7, 10 a.m. for
Best Band & Float; 10:15 a.m. for runner-up awards.
Ronald Bindle & Frank DiMaria will be present awards.
OLD BUSINESS:
Maurice Batarseh inquired if artists have been notified of acceptance/rejection into
Sterlingfest. Karen Kazmer reported all acceptance letters have been mailed; rejection
letters to be mailed.
Motion to adjourn the Cultural Commission meeting at 7:10 p.m.
