STERLING HEIGHTS CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, October 1, 2013 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313,
Conference Room 202, 6 p.m.
Members Present: Josephine Berthet, Ronald Bindle, David Bollman, Frank DiMaria, Grace
Finazzo, Margaret Frontiera, Donald Schinzing, John Stampor
Members Absent: Maurice Batarseh, Jan Burns, Eboni LaMar, Jeanne Schabath
Representing the City: Karen Kazmer
Meeting called to order at 6:03 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the September 3, 2013 Cultural Commission made by
Ron Bindle.
Seconded by: John Stampor Ayes: all Nays: none
AGENDA ITEMS:
A. Sterling Heights Featured Artist
No applications received.
Josephine Berthet suggested SHTV promote the featured artist program in hopes to bring
in more applicants to this program.
Frank DiMaria stated the Senior Center offers art classes; many taking the class are very
artistic and some might be interested in showing their work.
B. Sterlingfest
Commission members agree the jury process of artist applications for Sterlingfest needs
to changed.
o Cultural Commission members will not be on the pre-jury committee.
o Community Relations will alert applicants, before pre-jury process, of missing
requirements. If items are not received before pre-jury, the application will not be
considered for Sterlingfest.
o Applications that are not approved by pre-jury committee will be separated from
approved applications; Commission members will review those applications and
confirm committee’s recommendation.
o Commission members will walk through art fair to review quality of
workmanship of artists. Community Relations will track comments for next
Sterlingfest.
C. Oracle Sculpture
To date, $2,385 has been received for the Oracle Sculpture. Commission members
credited Joe Burns for his work on SterlingFAST and to the raffle held at Sterlingfest on
building up this account.
NEW BUSINESS:
Donald Schinzing stated the Art Center is accepting applications for mini-grants. Mr.
Schinzing would like to reinstate the Sterlingscapes Program.
Ronald Bindle will host the Cultural Commission’s Christmas Party at his house on
Friday, December 13th. Details to follow.
Happy Birthday to Josephine Berthet who will be celebrating her 70th birthday this
weekend!
