STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, June 8, 2016 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Conference Room 202 Members Present: Ron Bindle, Jan Burns, Frank DiMaria, Margaret Frontiera, Jazmine Early, Grace Finazzo, Jeanne Schabath, John Stampor Members Absent: David Bollman, Judi Dent, Shawn Taylor, Mona Yassine Representing the City: Bridget Doyle, Karen Kazmer Meeting called to order at 6:10 Featured Artist presentation made by Frank DiMaria in lower level of City Hall; Jan Burns is featured artist. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the May 3, 2016 Art Commission made by John Stampor. Seconded by: Grace Finazzo Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS : A. Memorial Day Parade Recap  Commission members discussed the changes in parade:  Positive feedback in staging in Dodge Park: groups liked extra space and restrooms  Have shuttle busses and trolley drop off on Utica Road and not enter Dodge Park  Move registration area closer to entrance in Dodge Park  Ensure person renting pavilion at Dodge Park they will not be allowed usage until after staging is done  Would like to have the parade end at Heritage Jr. High as in the past; show off new road work and bridge area  Shriners should be at the end of parade  Add weights to the bottom of parade banner  Commission members reviewed footage of bands playing at the parade and pictures of all floats  Motion to select Sterling Heights High School Marching Band as “Best of Show” Band and Henry Ford II Marching Band as “Runner- Up Best of Show” Band made by Ron Bindle. Seconded by: Peggy Fronteria Ayes: all Nays: none  Motion to select Boy Scout Troop 154’s float as “Best Float” and American Polish Century Club’s float at “Runner-up Float” made by John Stampor. Seconded by: Peggy Fronteria Ayes: all Nays: none B. Art in the Park  Jeanne Schabath and Frank DiMaria and his wife have volunteered to assist at the June 9th Art in the Park. Volunteers are still needed for the other three dates. C. Sterlingfest  Community Relations received an email in late May from Constance Guerra requesting entry into Sterlingfest. Commission members reviewed her artwork and approved her entry.  Ron Bindle would like Community Relations to contact Brian Budney of Bud’s Natural Creations to see if he would like to be an artist at Sterlingfest. If Mr. Budney is interested, commission members approve entry.  Community Relations will email members in early July to volunteer time at Sterlingfest. OLD BUSINESS:  Ron Bindle inquired of monies available to spend in the endowment fund with the Community Foundation. Monies received from Sterlingfast 2016 should be earmarked as pass thru funds.  The City is moving forward with the Public Art project; commission members will be notified if the proposal goes before Council in July.  Jeanne Schabath inquired if any members have written drafts on “what is art”; Ms. Schabath encourages members to start brainstorming ideas.  Stephen Bilan reported the VFW will be moving to a new location so the mural proposed to be painted on the side of building will be put on hold.  Discussion on other options for the display of Featured Artist. Bridget Doyle will contact Kyle Langlois to inquire if space is available at Rec Center and/or Senior Center. Motion to adjourn meeting at 7:20 p.m. made by Jan Burns.
