STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, March 6 , 2018 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Conference Room 202 Members Present: Jan Burns, Jazmine Early, Lawrence Farhat, Grace Finazzo, Jeanne Schabath, Mona Yassine and Stacy Ziarko Members Absent: Ron Bindle and David Bollman Representing the City: Bridget Kozlowski, Sue Giallombardo Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the January 9, 2018 Art Commission made by Farhat. Seconded by: Ziarko Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS : A. Memorial Day Parade  Schabath reminded commission members that this is a big year for the parade with the city celebrating their 50th anniversary.  The theme of this year's parade will be: "Celebrating 50 Years Honoring Those Who Serve - Past, Present and Future"  The staging area for the parade will move back to City Hall parking lot this year, due to the renovations being made at Dodge Park.  Kozlowski stated that the city is looking for new ideas for the parade and has rented a giant, inflatable cake that will require four people to walk it down the parade route.  Other ideas such as an ice cream truck or having the Pistons Drumline and Rosie the Riveter groups perform were discussed. Giallombardo will look into ideas.  Giallombardo stated that Macomb County Commissioner and past Mayor Pro Tem accepted as Grand Marshall. B. Sterlingfest Art & Music Fair  Kozlowski shared a preliminary map and discussed the layout of the festival. Artists will likely remain in the same area as last year, in front of City Hall. She added that nothing has been set yet, but stated that the renovations will be done by June 28th and layout plans will be finalized as the project progresses.  Kozlowski added that the Children's Artist tent will not be so isolated this year and also that the concert stages will be staggered so that the groups won't be playing simultaneously.  Joe Burns will likely not be able to organize Sterlingfast, and would like the city staff to take over the planning. Schabath stated that she would like to be involved as well. City Admin will meet with the Chamber of Commerce staff; Kozlowski would like to keep the event going. OLD BUSINESS:  Kozlowski stated that she has received four submissions for the mural contest; she added that herself and Tammy Turgeon will narrow down the submissions to  the top five and present them at the next meeting so that Commission members can select the winner.  Kozlowski said that all of the public art has been appraised by Heritage Appraisals and the results will be presented at the Budget Hearing meeting on April 24. Kozlowski added that the collection has increased in value overall; the Bear at the library are worth substantially more. Much of the work will be refurbished, and a quote is already in the works to have the Xs & Os refurbished for $800. Motion to have the Xs & Os artwork refurbished at a cost of $800 made by Schabath. Seconded by: Ziarko Ayes: all Nays: none  Burns asked the status of the mural that is being painted on the underpass of the bridge, and wondered if the sides of the area were being painted on as well. Schabath stated that MDOT would not allow the sides of the underpass to be painted. Kozlowski added that DPW will be sandblasting the area to be painted once the weather is suitable for painting and will follow up with the artist.  Kozlowski stated that the Beautification will be weeding and planting some flowers in the Children's Garden at the library in May and the area should look nice for the mural presentation.  The owner of the BP at Utica Road and Dodge Park would like a mural on the back wall of the building, which will eventually face the parking lot of the new Rec Building. No artist has been selected yet, plans are in the works. NEW BUSINESS:  Kozlowski shared a plaque that will be placed in the area near "The Seed"; the plaque lists City Council members as well as current Art Commission members.
