STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, January 9, 2018 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Conference Room 202 Members Present: Ron Bindle, David Bollman, Jan Burns, Jazmine Early, Lawrence Farhat, Grace Finazzo, Jeanne Schabath, Mona Yassine and Stacy Ziarko Members Absent: John Stampor Representing the City: Bridget Kozlowski, Sue Giallombardo Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the January 9, 2018 Art Commission made by Farhat. Seconded by: Burns Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS : A. Public Art Program  Kozlowski congratulated commission members on their time and dedication and said she received positive feedback from elected officials.  City Council has approved the MDOT mural; plans are moving forward for the installation.  Kozlowski stated that the next project will be the mural on the wall outside of Library in the Children's Garden. Commission members are free to offer any input and can follow up with Kozlowski.  Suggestions were made regarding the mural:  Ziarko suggested that residents design different sections.  Bollman added that all of the sections could be put together to form the mural; and a theme could be suggested as well.  Burns added that if kids could get involved they could feel like they were giving back to the community.  Kozlowski will go over the options before deciding. A press release will go out, followed by social media coverage. B. Featured Artist Program  Giallombardo received an application from Anastasia Chamiok. Although her pieces were all somewhat similar, Bollman noted that it's nice to get an application. Motion to approve Chamiok as a featured artist was made by Bollman. Seconded by: Schabath. Ayes: all Nays: none  Giallombardo will coordinate for February or March. C. Memorial Day Parade  Schabath suggested that Macomb County Commissioner and former City Councilman Joseph Romano be considered as the Grand Marshall of this year's parade. Motion to approve Romano as Grand Marshall made by Bindle. Seconded by: Bollman. Ayes: all Nays: none   The theme of this year's parade will be: "Celebrating 50 Years Honoring Those Who Serve - Past, Present and Future" D. Sterlingfest  Kozlowski showed the 3 applications for approval stating that the same logo will be used as last year, adding that they will be mailed out by the end of January.  The layout for Sterlingfest is going to be very different due to the renovations at Dodge Park. Final plans are still in the works. Kozlowski will keep commission members posted and will try to bring a map to the next meeting.  Schabath suggested that since this will be the city's 50th anniversary, Sterlingfast could be amped up a little by possibly having better give-ways.  Burns suggested customized metals and said she would talk to Joe Burns and follow up at the next meeting. E. Election of 2018 Officers  Motion to elect Jeanne Schabath as Art Commission Chair and Stacy Ziarko as Art Commission Co-Chair made by Bindle. Seconded by: Burns Ayes: all Nays: none OLD BUSINESS:  Jeanne Schabath in contact with the owner of Painting Sensations to arrange for her to attend a future meeting.  “Sterling Heights Art Rocks” is still very popular and the facebook page is getting a lot of posts. The woman who has painted many rocks was offered a gift card to Hobby Lobby by Schabath on behalf of the Commission; she thanked Commission for the thought but said that it was not necessary. NEW BUSINESS:  Kozlowski stated that she collected details on each piece of existing public art and it has all been appraised, with hopes that is has increased in value. The information will later be shared with the Commission and the public.  Eric Nordine, (artist of The Seed) said that Sterling Heights has the best collection of public art that he has seen.  Kozlowski stated that the merchandise commemorating the city's 50th anniversary is available online and can also be purchased from Community Relations.  Future events throughout the year will be tailored to include celebrating the milestone. Commission members are invited and encouraged to participate when they can. Motion to adjourn the Art Commission meeting at 7:00 p.m. made by Schabath.
