STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, October 3 , 2017 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313, Conference Room 202 Members Present: Ron Bindle, David Bollman, Jazmine Early, Lawrence Farhat, Jeanne Schabath, Mona Yassine, Stacy Ziarko Members Absent: Jan Burns, Grace Finazzo, John Stampor Representing the City: Bridget Kozlowski, Karen Kazmer Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the September 5, 2017 Art Commission made by Ron Bindle. Seconded by: Larry Farhat Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS : A. Public Art Program  Update on “The Seed”:  Installation will be in late October, early November 2017  Community Relations will send a “doodle poll” to commission members to set up a time to visit Nordine brothers studio  Mural:  Permit and formal approval paperwork has been sent to MDOT; response from MDOT should be received by end of week  At the request of MDOT, City Council will review an agreement regarding maintenance of the mural  The mural will be done in spring 2018  Unveiling of mural will be part of a 50th Anniversary event B. Featured Artist Program  No applications were received  Community Relations will contact Dolores Kurily to see if she is healthy and would like to be a featured artist  Community Relations will reach out to the two children artists at Sterlingfest to see if they are interested  David Bollman suggests Warren Fine Art Group and Shelby Township Art Group be contacted; he will provide contact information  Ron Bindle suggested the art teachers at local high schools to encourage students to apply  Stacy Ziarko suggested Brittany Koski be contacted OLD BUSINESS:  Jeanne Schabath will contact the owner of Painting Sensations and arrange for her to attend the January 2018 meeting  “Sterling Heights Art Rocks” is very popular and the facebook page is getting a lot of posts. One woman has painted many, many rocks; members would like to present her with a gift card to Hobby Lobby for material. Motion to approve the purchase of a $20 Hobby Lobby gift card to be presented to ……. Made by David Bollman. Seconded by: Stacy Ziarko Ayes: all Nays: none NEW BUSINESS:  Jeanne Schabath started “Sterling Heights Art Rocks”; painted rocks are hidden through-out the City. Members are encouraged to participate.  Jeanne Schabath recommends SterlingFast be promoted more for 2018 since it is the City’s 50th birthday.  Jeanne Schabath would like to consider awarding a $1,000 scholarship to graduating seniors who will be studying a trade.
