STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION
Minutes of Tuesday, September 5, 2017 Meeting
Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI
48313, Conference Room 202
Members Present: Ron Bindle, David Bollman, Jan Burns, Jazmine Early,
Lawrence Farhat, Grace Finazzo, Jeanne Schabath, Mona Yassine, Stacy Ziarko
Members Absent: John Stampor
Representing the City: Bridget Kozlowski, Karen Kazmer
Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES :
Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the June 6, 2017 Art Commission
made by Mona Yassine.
Seconded by: Stacy Ziarko Ayes: all Nays: none
Jeanne Schabath welcomed Lawrence Farhat as the new Art Commission
member.
AGENDA ITEMS :
A. Sterlingfest Review
Members discussed changes to the 2018 Sterlingfest artist area:
Several artists displayed items not juried in
Community Relations prints the power point presentation which is
used in the jury process; if members question displayed artwork the
print-out can be used to request artists remove such items
Artist application will be updated to include “if additional artwork will
be displayed in booth, please email pictures to the City two weeks
prior to Sterlingfest”
The first time artist application will be re-written to state “first time
artists to any artist show”
Children’s Art Area should be mingled in with the rest of the artist
booths
Art commission members would like the booth spaces re-numbered
to flow better
Art commission members would like a blown-up map of the artist
area
Artists whose customers have can purchase large items must be
placed along outside perimeter
Sterling fast
Over 500 participants
$3,100 was presented to the Art Commission for their endowment
fund
$1,800 was raised for the trail program
B. Public Art Program
Art Commission members and City Council members are invited to the
Nordine studio for a tour; Bridget Kozlowski suggested October 2nd
Members will be invited to a Wine & Cheese reception provided by the
Nordine brothers
The agreement between the City and Louise Chen for the mural
painting on the overpass has been approved and signed
A mural will be painted in the Library’s Children Garden; a call for artists
will go out
A mural will be painted on the back of the BP gas station at Utica &
Dodge Park
David Bollman presented a drawing of a sculpture for consideration of
the Public Art Program
The Nordine brothers will consult and assist with the repairs and
landscaping around Sterlingscapes
Bridget Kozlowski recommended the Art Commission select another art
project to spear head under the Public Art Program
Ron Bindle suggested the return of SterlingScapes for 2018
C. Featured Artist
No applications were received
D. 2017-18 Meeting Dates
Commission members accepted the meeting dates (first Tuesday of
every month); December 2017 meeting will be held off-site
OLD BUSINESS:
A meeting with the owner of Painting Sensations will be set up in March
2018 to discuss future Art in the Park programs. Members would like a
class on painting wine glasses to be held in the winter at the Senior
Center.
NEW BUSINESS:
Jeanne Schabath started “Sterling Heights Art Rocks”; painted rocks are
hidden through-out the City. Members are encouraged to participate.
Jeanne Schabath recommends SterlingFast be promoted more for 2018
since it is the City’s 50th birthday.
Jeanne Schabath would like to consider awarding a $1,000 scholarship to
graduating seniors who will be studying a trade.
Motion to adjourn the Art Commission meeting at 7:15 p.m. made by David
Bollman.
