STERLING HEIGHTS ARTS COMMISSION Minutes of Tuesday, October 2 , 2018 Meeting Location: Sterling Heights City Hall, 40555 Utica Ro ad, Sterling Height s, MI 48313, Conference Room 202 Members Present: Ron Bindle, David Bollman, Steve Couchman, Grace Finazzo, Jeanne Schabath, Mona Yassine and Stacy Ziarko. Members Absent: Jan Burns and Lawrence Farhat Representing the City: Sue Giallombardo Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m.  Gary Lusk was in attendance, and will be officially appointed to the Arts Commission at the October 16th City Council meeting. APPROVAL OF MINUTES : Motion to approve the meeting minutes of the June 5, 2018 Art Commission made by Finazzo; Seconded by: Bindle Ayes: all Nays: none AGENDA ITEMS : A. Ideas for Murals  Schabath stated that Farhat took photos of the suggested mural sights and she shared them with members. Schabath added that she liked the back of the wall at the Munro Muffler Shop at the intersection of Utica and Van Dyke. Bollman agreed but stated that the brick is very thick and it would be a challenge for the artist.  Schabath added that other locations included Zap Zone, Stevenson High School and Farmstead Park. Farmstead Park may be the future sight of the Zip Park. Finazzo suggested sporty abstract design for the wall at Zap Zone.  Finazzo added that the area by the Welcome to Sterling Heights sign at 14 Mile & Van Dyke would make a great location for a sculpture in the future.  Bollman stated that he likes the idea of painting murals on electric boxes; there is a sight along Avon Road in Rochester.  Schabath stated that she would like to see more murals and art projects outside the hub of the City Center. B. 2019 Art Projects  Schabath stated that Kozlowski asked members for art project ideas for 2019.  Schabath proposed an Art Walk; members would contact schools and ask for artwork from students that would be collected and displayed along the sidewalks during the first Farmers Market of the season.  Giallombardo stated that sculpture ideas were submitted to the city by Dave Bollman and Robert Barnum. Samples were shared with the members. She added that the project may be put on hold until early March to iron out the logistics of the sculpture requirements.  Bollman likes the idea of a wildlife theme, possibly at the corner of 17 Mile & Utica, by the protected wetlands, and would like to include children and families. Yasmine suggested a sculpture at the new Recreation Center. Lusk suggested one or two sculptures be installed at markers along the Nature Trail.   Yassine proposed a Kids Art Program, for children aged 7-17 years old. She added that the city could charge a membership cost, price per session, hire teachers and award prizes. Work could be displayed in City Hall or at the Senior Center.  Finazzo suggested a mosaic idea using 4x4 ceramic tiles. There would be no age limit; residents could suggest themes.  Lusk suggested using Easypromo, an app that allows you to take advantage of social media to run sweepstakes and contests. One example is that residents could submit pictures that could be combined together to create one large picture. OLD BUSINESS:  Giallombardo stated that the October/November Featured Artist, Leonard Russo, will be interviewed and awarded his certificate on October 17 at 10:00 a.m., and will follow up with an email invite.  Bindle confirmed that he will once again be hosting a Christmas Party, in place of the regular December meeting. The event will be on December 4th, at 7:00 p.m. More details to follow.  Giallombardo will follow up (again) regarding the graffiti on the underpass mural, as well as the anti-graffiti coating that was applied to the mural. NEW BUSINESS:  Metromode/Secondwavemedia has been featuring Sterling Heights on their website and recently highlighted the city's public art murals. They will be focusing on news and events in Sterling Heights for six months.  Schabath stated that Earth Day will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020. She distributed a power point presentation that gave a history of Earth Day, highlighted ideas to show Sterling Heights' "green" side, ideas for a 50th celebration and groundwork for a possible Scrap Battle Art Competition. Motion to adjourn the Art Commission meeting at 6:50 p.m. made by Bollman.
