AGENDA ITEMS:
A. 2019 Art Projects
Schabath stated that Kozlowski asked members for art project ideas for 2019;
Schabath proposed an Art Walk-- members would contact schools and ask for
artwork from students that would be collected and displayed along the
sidewalks during the first Farmers Market of the season. The Art Walk would
be a one-day event.
Schabath stated that Lusk shared his idea at the October meeting regarding a
photo contest using Easypromos.
Couchman suggested using a virtual reality camera to document all of the
city's public art for the city's website, allowing for a 3-D look at the artwork.
Couchman also suggested contacting ITC, and covering some of the high
voltage towers with colored vinyl wraps. He stated that the towers are an
eyesore and that he has connections at ITC.
Yassine re-capped the idea of a children's art program and shared a power
point presentation with members. The program would allow for 60 students, in
two different age groups, to register for classes that meet monthly, with a
different project each month. Yassine suggested hiring professional artists to
instruct each class, charging a fee for enrollment that would help cover the
cost of supplies and payment to the instructors. The work would then be
displayed throughout City Hall, the Senior Center and/or the new Recreation
Center. Giallombardo stated that this is a huge undertaking and added that
Community Relations doesn't have proper staffing for this type of project, and
suggested fewer sessions and smaller class sizes.
Since Finazzo was not present, Giallombardo reminded members of the
mosaic tile project that was suggested at the October meeting. Finazzo
suggested using 4"x4" glass tiles with Sterling Heights themes; tiles could be
installed as a mural on a city wall to be determined at a later date.
Members voted for the top 3 projects, taken from a list of six presented ideas:
o Art classes - 5 votes
o 3-D Visioning - 3 votes
o Art walk - 4 votes
o Mosaic tiling - 4 votes
o Tower wraps - 3 votes
o Photo contest - 5 votes
It was decided to select three ideas to put into action during 2019. The topic
will be discussed further at the January 2019 meeting.
B. 2019 Memorial Day Parade, Grand Marshal
Schabath stated that she will recommend a veteran that is a Sterling Heights
resident; she will follow up with a bio.
Couchman asked of the Grand Marshal had to be a veteran; he recommended
Colonel Laurel "Buff" Burkel, an active member of the US Air Force.
Bindle asked who the person was that assists with finding local Veterans,
Schabath stated that Steve Bilan is active with the local Veterans
organizations and assists with the planning of the Veterans Day Ceremony
each year.
Bollman suggested that the theme of the parade highlights women in the
military.
