STERLING HEIGHTS BEAUTIFICATION COMMISSION
MEETING MINUTES
Tuesday, September 8, 2015
Chairman Gary Isom called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
Commissioner’s present:
Henrietta Baczewski, Paola Colombini, Steve Duncan, Gary Isom, Darlene MacLeod,
Sharon Mason, Ruthann Schinzing and Kate Tuttle-Sniecinski
Commissioner’s absent:
Janis Adams, Stephanie Guran, Joyce Tye and Ann Williams
(Note: Guran and Tye were unaware that they were on the Commission, which was
effective September 1, 2015)
Other present:
Bridget Doyle, Community Relations Director
Sue Giallombardo, Neighborhood Services Specialist
Approval of Minutes:
Motion to approve Minutes of the April 7, 20145 meeting by Tuttle-Sniecinski; Seconded
by: Mason
Ayes: all Nays: none
Agenda Items:
A. Approval of 2015/2016 Meeting Dates
MacLeod stated that the regular meeting for October 5 was cancelled due
to the Beautification Award presentation taking place at the City Council
meeting on Tuesday, October 6.
Motion to approve 2015/2016 Meeting Dates made by Duncan; Seconded
by Mason. Ayes: all Nays: none
B. Adopt-a-Road Clean-up - September 12
Isom stated that at least four commission members should be available for
the Adopt-a-Road clean up dates.
Schinzing stated that members meet at Walsh Elementary at 9:00 a.m. and
clean the roadside between 17 Mile and Metro Parkway.
It was decided that Sept. 12 was not a good day; members will attempt to
meet on Sept. 19. Giallombardo will send out a reminder e-mail.
C. 2015 Beautification Awards Jurying
Giallombardo stated that over 60 entries were submitted for businesses,
churches, multi-family complexes and single family homes. No entries
were submitted for schools.
Commission members voted on all of the entries and the award winners
are as follows:
Businesses: Clinton Valley Shopping Center
Churches: St. Jane Francis de Chantal Catholic Church
Multi-family: Abderdeen Gardens
Single family: 13830 Bathgate Drive
Giallombardo will notify all nominees via letters and will extend an
invitation to attend the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 7:30
p.m.. There will be reserved seating for Commission members, in the front
row.
Please arrive around 7:00 p.m. to greet guests. There will be light snacks
and refreshments in the lobby prior to the start of the meeting.
Old Business:
Giallombardo thanked members for planting flowers (Mason, MacLeod
and Williams) around the Upton House and for their participation during
Sterlingfest at the Information table.
New Business:
Doyle stated that the date of the Volunteer/Employee Appreciation
Banquet is on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 6:00 p.m. at Penna's of Sterling
Heights, located at 38400 Van Dyke Avenue. Please call Community
Relations with your RSVP if you haven't already.
Doyle added that there will be a 9/11 Ceremony at City Hall on Sept. 11 at
8:30 a.m. The "Honor Flag" is making a visit in Sterling Heights. Coffee
and doughnuts will be served.
Baczewski asked if the city could display a "Tree City USA" flag
somewhere. Giallombardo stated that the flag cannot be displayed on a
pole alongside the American flag, but added that Community Relations
will follow-up with other departments for suggestions.

Motion to adjorn the Beautification Commission meeting at 7:15 p.m. made by MacLeod;
seconded by Baczewski. Ayes: All Nays: None
