CITY OF STERLING HEIGHTS MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING OF CITY COUNCIL TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2017 IN CITY HALL Mayor Michael C. Taylor called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Mayor Taylor led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and Melanie D. Ryska, City Clerk, gave the Invocation. Council Members present at roll call: Deanna Koski, Gary Lusk, Maria G. Schmidt, Nate Shannon, Liz Sierawski, Michael C. Taylor, Barbara A. Ziarko. Also Present: Mark Vanderpool, City Manager; Marc D. Kaszubski, City Attorney; Melanie D. Ryska, City Clerk; Carol Sobosky, Recording Secretary. APPROVAL OF AGENDA, Moved by Koski, seconded by Ziarko, to approve the Agenda as presented. Yes: All. The motion carried. 1. City Clerk Melanie D. Ryska read the results of the Macomb County Board of Canvassers, finalized yesterday afternoon: Office of Mayor: Michael C. Taylor received 12,063 votes and was elected Mayor. Candidate Jeffrey I. Norgrove received 3,681 votes. Official Write-In Candidate Steve Naumovski received 87 votes. Special City Council Meeting Tuesday November 14, 2017 Page 2 Clerk Ryska stated there were six individuals elected to City Council, each for a two-year term, and the votes were as follows: Liz Sierawski received 10,064 votes and elected to City Council. In accordance with the City’s Charter, she is officially Mayor Pro-Tem as a result of being the highest vote-getter. Maria G. Schmidt received 9,456 votes and elected to City Council. Barbara A. Ziarko received 9,455 votes and elected to City Council. Deanna Koski received 9,204 votes and elected to City Council. Nate Shannon received 9,056 votes and elected to City Council. Michael Radtke received 7,470 votes and elected to City Council. Additional candidates include the following: Gary W. Lusk received 7,450 votes. Eric Castiglia received 6,034 votes. Jazmine M. Early received 4,693 votes. Sanaa Elias received 4,445 votes. Nicholas A. Cavalli received 4,400 votes. Hiethem Choulagh received 2,376 votes. Councilman Lusk considered himself fortunate for being given opportunity by the Council to serve the city as a member of the City Council over these past eight months, indicating he has met some wonderful people. He stated he will Special City Council Meeting Tuesday November 14, 2017 Page 3 be glad to continue to serve in any way he can, and he congratulated and wished Councilman-elect Radtke all the best. Each of the remaining members of Council took a turn thanking Councilman Lusk for his dedication and service to this community, and wished him well. They commended him for being a man of his word, dedicated, gracious, loving to serve the community, his sense of humor, and being a “class act” who has left an impact on both the Council and the residents in the short time he served on Council. Mayor Taylor called a short recess at 6:41 p.m., and the meeting reconvened at 6:43 p.m. 2. Chief Judge Stephen S. Sierawski administered the Oath of Office to Mayor Taylor and the City Council members. 3. Each Council member took a turn thanking their families, friends and colleagues and the public for their support in this election, and each of the members are looking forward to the next two years working together to move the City forward. COMMUNICATIONS FROM CITIZENS Mr. Nick Cavalli – congratulated all Council members on the results of the election; expressed the utmost respect and trust that they will do what is best for the City in the next two years, and thanked them for their service. Special City Council Meeting Tuesday November 14, 2017 Page 4 Mr. Jerry Sieja – congratulated all Council members, Mayor Taylor and especially newly-elected Councilman Radtke; commended the City on the new skate park; has heard a lot of positive feedback, and commented it will be an asset to the community; skaters were extremely considerate of one another; he heard comments from skaters that they would like to see lights for nighttime skating, and possibly platforms to stand on; ReCreating Recreation is a great asset to the community; contractor for skate park did an excellent job. REPORTS FROM CITY ADMINISTRATION AND CITY COUNCIL Mr. Vanderpool wished the Mayor and all City Council members the best, and informed that he has no report this evening. Mr. Kaszubski stated he has nothing to report. ADJOURN Moved by Ziarko, seconded by Schmidt, RESOLVED, to adjourn the meeting. Yes: All. The motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 7:02.
