City of Sterling Heights ETHNIC COMMUNITY COMMITTEE Official minutes of the Thursday, October 3, 2013 regular meeting. MEMBERS PRESENT: Sharron Allen Mohammed Alomari Omie Brooks Ike Cabase Ann Jerzowski Susan Kattula MEMBERS ABSENT: Doug Najor Dr. Steve Naumovski Andrew Pulford Betty Rush Iqbal Singh OFFICIALS PRESENT: Citizen Services Specialist Sue Giallombardo Community Relations Director Steve Guitar 1. Call to Order 2. Roll Call 3. Approval of Agenda: MOTION by Sharron Allen, SECONDED by Omie Brooks. Approved 6-0 4. Approval of Minutes: MOTION by Susan Kattula, SECONDED by Ann Jerzowski. Approved 6-0 5. Communication from Citizens: None 6. Communications from the Sterling Heights Police Dept. – Sgt. Jim Selewski o Giallombardo stated that Sgt. Selewski is still recovering from his surgery. o Cabase said that he stopped by the police lobby to ask about Selewski’s status, the officer at the front desk said that his surgery went well. 7. Agenda A. 2013 Diversity Distinction Awards Ceremony o Giallombardo stated that she has received only one nomination and asked committee members to submit nominations and to pass the message along to friends and co-workers. o Cabase asked if Ethnic Community Committee members were elligible to receive an award; residents from the Senior Center were inquiring. o Giallombardo stated that the committee members voted on that issue prior to the inaugual awards, and the committee voted ‘no’. o The last day for submitting nominations is November 4th. B. 2014 Cultural Exchange o Giallombardo gave a brief summary of the Cultural Exchange and what goes on at the event for the newest members. Giallombardo stated that anyone is invited to attend the event, or participate in the event. She added that table displays and entertainment groups must have an ethnic theme. o Giallombardo disbused participation forms and encouraged members to distribute them to as many people as possible. o Giallombardo added that sponsor dollars have not been as strong as they have been in the past and asked committee members to work on securing sponsors for the program. o Cabase stated that the members could discuss the cultural exchange at the next meeting and members could offer suggestions to improve on the event. 8. Receipt of Correspondence o Cabase distributed a great monthly calendar of events happening throughout the state for the month of October. 9. New Business: None 10. Old Business: o Giallombardo stated that she confirmed with the library staff that Allen will be displaying her items in the showcase during February. o It was later confirmed that Kattula will be able to display her nativity scenes in the showcase during December. Kattula’s nativity scenes will also be on display in the Upton House during Sterling Christmas. o Allen asked what is going to be done with the sister city flags that were on display at the Ethnic Community Committee’s table during Sterlingfest. o Giallombardo stated that members are welcome to create a display for use during the Cultural Exchange; or she will create one to display. 11. Adjournment. Meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
