Minutes of Meeting
I. Call to Order
Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Spontz.
II. Roll Call
Present: F. James Dunlop, Douglas J. Harvey, Ruthann Schinzing, Laura Szpont, Scott
Townsend
Absent: George Kurzatkowski, Peter Mattera
III. Approval of Agenda
Item VI. E. Upton House Tours, VI. F. Historical Plaques, VII. C. Meeting Dates/Times and VII.
D. Sterlingfest was proposed to be added to the agenda. Motion made by Townsend to approve
the agenda as amended, seconded by Szpont. Motion carried.
IV. Minutes of September 1, 2011
Minutes of the September 1, 2011 meeting were approved on a motion by Dunlop, supported by
Harvey. Motion carried.
V. Communications/Reports/Correspondence
Commission members requested that meeting agendas, minutes, etc. be sent via email to save on
postage. Commission members discussed attendance at the Michigan Local History Conference
to be held at Macomb Community College Warren campus.
VI. Unfinished Business
A. Sterling Christmas
The Upton House had 570 visitors. $37.33 was collected in donations. Four commissioners
assisted at the house this year. Commissioners suggested asking past members to volunteer, as
well as family and friends.
B. Historical Display Case in Library
The display case needs to be changed for May – August. Turgeon will ask Mattera if he is
interested in continuing this project. Ideas discussed for the display case were Cemeteries,
Churches, Upton House, Sterling Heights events.
C. Clippings and Scrapbook
Harvey is working on this project from home. Townsend may be interested in helping as well.
D. Veteran’s History Project
There have been no new participants. Commissioners would like to continue this as long as
funding/staffing allows.
E. Upton House Tours
Commissioners are willing to do tours, but need at least one week notice.
F. Historical Plaques
Turgeon brought in an example of St. Clair Shores Historical Marker program. Spontz offered to
type up a draft form for Sterling Heights to use.
VII. New Business
A. Spring/Summer Magazine article
Turgeon will work on an article. Suggestions were for farms/tractors, Memorial Day parade or
Sterlingfest.
B. Historical Commission program
The annual Historical Commission program will be held on Wednesday, May 16th at 7 p.m. in
the library Programming Center. Patrick Livingston is presenting “Summer Dreams: The Story
of Bob-lo Island”.
C. Meeting Dates/Times
The Commissioners discussed changing the meeting dates and times. Commissioners decided to
keep the dates and times the same.
D. Sterlingfest
Sterlingfest will be July 26th – 28th. The commission needs volunteers to staff the Upton House
on Friday and Saturday from 3 – 7 p.m. Turgeon will bring the signup sheet to the May meeting.
The magazine will show the days and hours for the Upton House.
VIII. Communication from Citizens
None
IX. Adjourn
A motion was made by Schinzing to adjourn, seconded by Townsend. Motion carried. Meeting
adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
