Minutes of Meeting
I. Call to Order
Meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m.
II. Roll Call
Present: John Conner, Frank DiMaria, Douglas J. Harvey, Ruthann Schinzing, Scott
Townsend
Absent: Laura Szpont
III. Approval of Agenda
It was requested to add item VII. C. Meeting Dates 2012/13 and D. School Desk to the
agenda. Motion made by Harvey to approve the agenda as amended, seconded by
Schinzing. Motion carried.
IV. Minutes of May 3, 2012
Minutes of the May 3, 2012 meeting were approved on a motion by Townsend,
supported by Schinzing. Motion carried.
V. Communications/Reports/Correspondence
Commission members continue to receive local historical groups’ newsletters forwarded
to them via email.
VI. Unfinished Business
A. Historical Display in Library
Harvey’s photography display will remain until the Spring. Future suggestion would be
something to honor James Dunlop.
B. Historical Marker Program
Homes need to be at least 60 years old. Commission would like signs to look similar to
the Michigan historical signs. Once the marker is chosen a press release should be
done to promote the program. Turgeon will investigate how many homes currently have
the designation. Commission would like to go to the homes that are approved to present
the plaque.
C. Sterlingfest Wrapup
893 people came through the Upton House during Sterlingfest and 38 people entered
the contest. Sterling Christmas is on December 1, 2012.
D. Macomb County Heritage Alliance – Patch Program
Harvey will try to create a patch. Schinzing will ask a friend to also create a design.
Commission will review at the next meeting.
E. James Dunlop Memorial
A book was donated by the Historical Commission in memory of James Dunlop and his
wife received a letter indicating the gift. It was suggested that one of the trees planted
by City Hall have a plaque dedicated to James Dunlop. Turgeon will contact Community
Relations about the possibility.
VII. New Business
A. Winter Magazine article
Turgeon will write an article about James Dunlop.
B. Bylaws Review
Commission reviewed Bylaws. Changes were suggested and a draft will be presented
at the November meeting for Commission review and approval.
C. Meeting Dates 2012/13
The scheduled dates for 2012/13 meetings was presented to the Commission following
the same schedule as previous years. Meetings will be held on the first Thursday in
September, November, February and May at 6 p.m. Motion was made by Schinzing to
approve the meeting dates, seconded by Harvey. Motion carried.
D. School Desk
Harvey offered to repair and refinish the old school desk that is upstairs at the Upton
House at no cost to the city. Motion to approve the repair of the desk by Harvey was
made by Conner, seconded by Schinzing. Motion carried. The Commission thanked
Harvey for his generous offer.
VIII. Communication from Citizens
Mattera resigned from the Historical Commission. The Commission should have a new
member by the November meeting.
IX. Adjourn
A motion was made by Townsend to adjourn, seconded by DiMaria. Motion carried.
Meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
