Sterling Heights Historical Commission February 6, 2014 40433 Utica Road Sterling Heights, MI 48313 Minutes of Meeting I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. II. Roll Call Present: John Connor, Frank DiMaria, Meaghan Mott, Ruthann Schinzing, Scott Townsend Absent: Douglas J. Harvey Staff Present: Tammy Turgeon III. Approval of Agenda Motion made by DiMaria to approve the agenda, seconded by Connor. Motion carried. IV. Minutes of November 25, 2013 Minutes of the November 25, 2013 meeting were approved on a motion by Connor, supported by DiMaria. Motion carried. V. Communications/Reports/Correspondence Commission members continue to receive local historical groups’ newsletters forwarded to them via email. Turgeon promoted the Local History Conference that will be taking place at the Sterling Inn. Jeff Norgrove addressed the Commission regarding his resignation due to his appointment on the Sterling Heights Planning Commission. He thanked them for their service and is committed to participate in next year’s Sterling Christmas. He also spoke of getting period furniture for the Upton House. DiMaria took a group of 8 on a tour of the Upton House. When giving a tour, please let Turgeon know how many people came so that we can keep statistics. VI. Unfinished Business A. Sterling Christmas 227 people came through the house. Numbers were down, but it was much colder this year. The Commission thought we should try to get new decorations. B. Spring/Summer Magazine Article Mott will do the magazine article on Sterling Heights city government. C. Historical Display in Library  The case was moved to the first floor by the Friends’ Bookstore. Turgeon will contact Harvey to see how the display is coming along. Commission suggested having a comment book for the display for residents to share stories, get contacts of people with photos, etc. D. Clippings and Scrapbook Mott has been working with Debbie Vercellone from the library and scanning in old photographs. E. Historical Marker Program Townsend indicated that he will assist Turgeon in getting this program going. Commissioners asked if buildings could be included as well as homes. F. Macomb County Heritage Alliance Patch Program Turgeon attended the MCHA meeting in January. The group is in the early stages and needs volunteers. The county-wide meeting in the Spring will be good for as many Commissioners to attend as possible. VII. New Business A. Election of Chairperson Motion to nominate Frank DiMaria was made by Townsend, supported by Schinzing. Motion carried. DiMaria was voted as Chairperson unanimously. B. Historical Commission Program Commissioners considered ideas for the May program. Turgeon will contact the Utica history book author (Mott has contact info). If that does not work, Turgeon will contact past Michigan Notable Book award winners on topic of Detroit historical places of worship. C. Fall Magazine Article Townsend will consider doing the Fall article on sports figures from Sterling Heights. VIII. Communications from Citizens Turgeon asked the Commissioners to support the Friends of the Library with their Kroger Community Rewards fundraising. IX.
