Sterling Heights Historical Commission August 3 , 2017 40433 Utica Road Sterling Heights, MI 48313 Minutes of Meeting I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:01 p.m. by Mott. II. Roll Call Present: John Connor, Frank DiMaria, Douglas J. Harvey, Meghan Mott, Steve Pomaville, Scott Townsend Staff Present: Tammy Turgeon Excused: Cynthia Appleton III. Approval of Agenda Motion to approve the agenda was made by Connor, supported by Harvey. Motion carried. IV. Minutes of May 10, 2017 No minutes were taken due to lack of quorum for last meeting. V. Communications/Reports/Correspondence Commission members continue to receive local historical groups’ newsletters forwarded to them via email. Turgeon received a letter from the Norgroves regarding the organ donation. The library will be sending a thank you and recognizing the donation in the next city magazine. VI. Unfinished Business A. Names Project The document is on google docs so that everyone can update it. This is an ongoing project. B. Oral History Conversion Project Turgeon would love a volunteer to help with this. C. Wikipedia Page The city’s page was updated. Mott is interested in hosting a Wikipedia edit- a-thon. D. Historical Display in Library Townsend will be doing this. Connor should be notified when we are ready to have his current display taken out. E. Clippings and Scrapbook One of the library staff members is assisting with this project. Still need a volunteer to keep this going. F. City of Sterling Heights Book The book will be published in December 2017. Turgeon will also order the Township books to sell. G. Historical Marker Program No new applications. H. City’s 50th Anniversary 1. Tour of City Commission reviewed a preliminary bus route that Turgeon created. Turgeon will drive the route to make sure it is not longer than one hour. Turgeon will ask Parks & Recreation how many buses could be available and have them set up registration for tours. Commission would like to charge $5. Turgeon will ask for a Saturday in June 2018 with tours at 9am, 11am and 1pm. Commissioners also discussed the time capsule. Suggested having it the size of a copier box and include local schools info, Sterlingfest info, and pictures from residents. We should ask for community input in the next magazine. Turgeon will talk to Community Relations. 2. Memorial Day Parade Commissioners will decide by February meeting if they will participate. They would need a vehicle or float to ride in the parade. I. CDBG Grant Application The Upton House application was approved. Turgeon is waiting to find out when funding will be available and then will need assistance to get bids for the project. This will provide repairs for the outside of the house as well as repainting. J. Winter City Magazine Article Mott will write an article for the Winter city magazine. The deadline is October 6th. K. May Historical Program Commission suggested Don Heaton from Macomb County Department of Public Works. It was also suggested to have Debbie Vercellone, the author of the city’s book, talk about the book. Turgeon will ask Debbie. L. MCHA Annual Meeting Mott and Harvey attended. There was a history of Selfridge program and tour of the base. M. Sterlingfest Wrapup The Upton House had 484 visitors during Sterlingfest with $83 in donations. VII. New Business A. Purchasing Items for the Upton House Commissioners were grateful for the organ donation. Commissioners suggested asking Stephanie or Kim Parr about making period clothing. It was also suggested to purchase mannequins to display period clothing. New drapery in the style of the late 1800’s would also be good. B. Spring City Magazine Article Turgeon volunteered to write an article about the bus tour and the new book. C. 2017-18 Historical Commission Meeting Schedule The Commission will continue with four meetings a year on the first Thursday of the month. Motion to approve the 2017-18 meeting dates was made by DiMaria, seconded by Connor. Motion carried. VIII. Communications from Citizens None IX. Adjourn Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Connor, seconded by DiMaria. Motion carried. Meeting ended at 7:38 p.m. Next meeting: November 2, 2017 at 6 p.m.
