Sterling Heights Historical Commission November 2, 2017 40433 Utica Road Sterling Heights, MI 48313 Minutes of Meeting I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:03 p.m. by Mott. II. Roll Call Present: Cynthia Appleton, John Connor, Frank DiMaria, Douglas J. Harvey, Meghan Mott, Steve Pomaville, Scott Townsend Staff Present: Tammy Turgeon Excused: All present III. Approval of Agenda Mott requested adding items VII.C. Macomb 200th and VII.D. Volunteer Fair to the agenda. Motion to approve the agenda as amended was made by DiMaria, supported by Connor. Motion carried. IV. Minutes of August 3, 2017 Motion to approve the minutes of the August 3, 2017 meeting was made by DiMaria, supported by Pomaville. Motion carried. V. Communications/Reports/Correspondence Commission members continue to receive local historical groups’ newsletters forwarded to them via email. VI. Unfinished Business A. Names Project The document is on google docs so that everyone can update it. This is an ongoing project and will be used for the bus tour. B. Oral History Conversion Project Volunteer names were gathered at Volunteer Fair. C. Wikipedia Page The city’s page was updated. D. Historical Display in Library Townsend will get foam board from Turgeon’s office. E. Clippings and Scrapbook Volunteer names were gathered at Volunteer Fair.  F. City of Sterling Heights Book Turgeon will order copies of books to sell. G. Historical Marker Program No new applications. H. City’s 50th Anniversary 1. Tour of City Turgeon will work with Parks and Recreation for tours to be done on Saturday, June 9th. There will be a $5 fee. Tours will be at 9am, 11am and 1pm and will run approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Tickets can be purchased through the Parks and Recreation system. Turgeon will also work with Community Relations on the time capsule. Commissioners suggested publicizing on Facebook group: I grew up in Sterling Heights and the local paper as well as the city’s Facebook groups. 2. Memorial Day Parade Commissioners have decided to participate in the parade. Connor is working on getting a truck. Commissioners are interested in wearing a themed hat. I. CDBG Grant Application Funding is now available and a proposal was received from an architectural firm to evaluate and write up bid specs for contractors to bid on the work to update the exterior of the Upton House. J. Spring City Magazine Article Turgeon will write an article about the bus tour, time capsule, the city book and Macomb County 200th anniversary passport program. K. May Historical Program Commission would like Debbie Vercellone to do a program about the new city book that she authored. May 16, 2018 was a good date for most commissioners. L. Purchasing Items for the Upton House Turgeon showed Powerpoint of late 1800’s clothing created by Danielle Kopacki at the Library. Commissioners want to purchase simpler clothing. Mott will provide Turgeon with contacts. Kopacki has also investigated linens for drapery. Mott will provide Turgeon with a contact she got from Kim Parr at the Crocker House. Turgeon will order mannequins. VII. New Business A. A Sterling Christmas  Decorating the Upton House will occur on Tuesday, November 14th from 4- 6 p.m. Turgeon will contact Ruthann Schinzing to borrow holiday dishes. B. Utica Sentinel Digitization Grant Turgeon applied for the grant. We will be notified if we are a finalist before Thanksgiving. C. Macomb 200th The Commission would like to open up the Upton House on the second Sunday of each month from 1-3 p.m. during 2018 for the MCHA Passport program. Turgeon is working on the creation of a stamp of the Upton House to use on the passports. D. Volunteer Fair Thanks to Mott, DiMaria and Harvey for working the table for the Historical Commission to get volunteers to work at the Upton House and work on other projects. 12 volunteers provided their names, along with other groups that wanted to work on projects together. VIII. Communications from Citizens Nick Cavalli, resident, introduced himself. Attended meeting based on his interest in history. IX. Adjourn Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Connor, seconded by Pomaville. Motion carried. Meeting ended at 7:35 p.m. Next meeting: February 1, 2018 at 6 p.m.
