Minutes of Meeting
I. Call to Order
Meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. by Mott.
II. Roll Call
Present: Cynthia Appleton, Frank DiMaria, Douglas J. Harvey, Meghan Mott,
Steve Pomaville, Scott Townsend
Staff Present: Tammy Turgeon
Excused: John Connor
III. Approval of Agenda
Motion to approve the agenda was made by DiMaria, supported by Harvey.
Motion carried.
IV. Minutes of February 1, 2018
Motion to approve the minutes of the February 1, 2018 meeting was made by
Appleton, supported by DiMaria. Motion carried.
V. Communications/Reports/Correspondence
Commission members continue to receive local historical groups’ newsletters
forwarded to them via email.
VI. Unfinished Business
A. Names Project
The document is on google docs so that everyone can update it. After the
bus tour, items that pertain to it will be moved to this document.
B. Oral History Conversion Project
No additional work has been done on this. Commissioners are welcome to
assist. Turgeon will also see if the Library’s practicum student can assist.
C. Wikipedia Page
An editathon will be done in the Fall at the Clinton-Macomb Public Library.
D. Historical Display in Library
Townsend will contact Connor to remove his items and will install the new
display before the end of the month.
E. Clippings and Scrapbook
Mr. Himmler, a volunteer, has scanned most of the photos that the Library
has. Next we will have a volunteer or intern work on scanning the existing
clippings into pdf text readable documents so that they can be searched.
F. Historical Marker Program
No new applications.
G. City’s 50th Anniversary
1. Tour of City
Townsend, Turgeon and Mott will be the tour guides. Harvey, DiMaria and
Appleton will be the backups/helpers. Turgeon will get cookies/water for
the attendees. Mott and Turgeon will do a final practice on June 4th.
Debbie Vercellone from the Library will review the script for the tour.
Registrations were limited to 20 people per tour. We currently have 17
people signed up for each one.
2. Memorial Day Parade
Connor will have a car for us to ride in the parade. Turgeon will get the
banner. Commissioners should let Turgeon know shirt sizes so everyone
can wear the 50th anniversary shirts. Turgeon will send out time and
location information.
H. CDBG Grant Application
The roof will be installed in May.
I. Fall City Magazine Article
Thanks for Cynthia for writing the next article about Mayor Al Martin.
J. May Historical Program
Debbie Vercellone will do a program about the new city book for the
program on May 16th. Mott will sell 50th anniversary items.
K. Purchasing Items for the Upton House
Turgeon will no longer be doing curtains due to the cost of the antique
lace. She will try washing the curtain lace to see if it brightens up. Turgeon
will research furniture of the time period and purchase replicas if possible.
Commission suggested going to antique stores or estate sales.
VII. New Business
A. Winter City Magazine Article
Mott will write an article on Sarah Aldrich and the family.
B. Sterlingfest
Event will be held July 26 – 28. The Upton House will be open July 27th and
28th from 4-7 p.m. DiMaria and Harvey have signed up for both days.
Townsend can attend on the 27th but will be late. We still need at least one
more person each day.
C. 2018/19 Historical Commission Budget
Next year’s budget includes the $4,000 increase in supplies that was
provided for this year. Improvements to the inside of the house, as well as
changing up the displays, were suggested as uses for the funds.
VIII. Communications from Citizens
The alarm went off in the house on the day of the last tour. The code was reset so
we should be ok now.
The Haff Farm is for sale.
Commissioners suggested that we put a copy of the Upton House brochure, a
copy of the city’s summer magazine, a copy of the township and city books, and a
list of businesses located in Sterling Heights in the time capsule.
IX. Adjourn
Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Pomaville, seconded by Townsend.
Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:20 p.m.
