Library Board of Trustees Minutes of Meeting November 18, 2019 Sterling Heights Public Library 40255 Dodge Park, Sterling Heights, MI 48313 586-446-2665 I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Chris Frezza, Chair, at 5:30 p.m. II. Roll Call Members Present: Dave Brown, Shirley Cozort, Chris Frezza, Terry Hojnacki , Stacy Ziarko Members Excused: none III. Approval of Agenda Item X.C. Circulation Policy Revision was requested to be added to the agenda. Motion to approve the Agenda as amended was made by Ziarko, seconded by Cozort. Motion carried. IV. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve the minutes of the meeting of September 16, 2019 was made by Cozort, seconded by Brown. Motion carried. V. Communication from Citizens Brown read and distributed a statement he wrote about the Sterling Heights Public Library. VI. Monthly Reports, Statistics, and Correspondence A. Building-Wide Stats – FY2019 / FY2020 Board reviewed statistics. Circulation continues to be up compared to last year with Emedia circulation up 19%. Library visits are down compared to last year. The extension/outreach service is continuing with its current patronage. In library PC usage continues trending down as patrons are bringing their own laptops to the library to use. Collection size overall has increased due to the increase in emedia. Physical collection size will decrease as collection development weeding is performed due to fewer physical shelves in the renovation layout of the building. B. Monthly Issues – September and October 2019 Board reviewed the monthly issues reports. Highlights: Thank you to those board members that were able to attend the ribbon cutting for the new storywalk in Beaver Creek Park. Turgeon will ask Langlois for possible parks. Installation should be done in the spring. Toddler Time and Storytime sessions have been extremely popular. Two fall reading programs run through November. The Teen Advisory Board is having a Nightmare Before Christmas event on Friday, December 13th. C. Compliment/Complaint Forms Board reviewed compliments. Received compliments for the adult craft nights (pumpkin craft, DIY spa), Demystifying computers program, Toddler Time, Shake, Rattle and Roll program, Puzzle Competition, Trivia program, great selection of books on the second floor, Early Literacy Night program, Baby Lapsit, and DIA Vogue program. Staff compliments were received for Jason Groth, Stephanie Fair, Gary Johnson, Brent Efing, Jennifer Smart, and Carolyn Sherrill. Board reviewed suggestions/complaints. Complaint was received about layout of Wowbrary emails and distinguishing formats. This was explained to the resident. Suggestion was made to have a coffee shop and fresh pastries. The library does not have the space for a coffee shop or for additional vending machines. When building renovation occurs we will look at alternative vending companies. Complaint was received about the library being noisy. The library serves all ages and the children’s and teen areas can get noisy. The second floor is designated as a quieter space. VII. Suburban Library Cooperative The Cooperative is holding its annual meeting for trustees on December 16th at the Clinton-Macomb Public Library in the morning. Invitations are going out this week. VIII. Friends of the Library A. Bookstore Report The bookstore income is trending slightly less than last year. B. 2020 Budget The Friends of the Library are supporting the Library with a budget of $54,000 for 2020. The majority of the expenses are for programming and Overdrive. IX. Unfinished Business None X. New Business A. Proposed 2020 Library Closings Ziarko made a motion to approve the 2020 Library Closings schedule, supported by Hojnacki. Motion carried. B. Building Updates Turgeon provided the board with drawings for the building updates. These include an enclosed teen area, the move of the youth services librarians’ offices, the addition of three study rooms, movement/removal of shelves, and addition of tables/chairs. The renovations will begin in January and the library is expected to be completed by the end of August. As soon as timelines are provided for when items will be moved and where, Turgeon will let staff and the Friends know. C. Circulation Policy Revision Suggested revisions were to add the regular Blu-ray circulation of 14 days, to remove the Videogames circulation rules, to change the processing fee for all items to $2. Motion to approve the revised Circulation Policy was made by Brown, supported by Hojnacki. Motion carried. XI. Adjourn Motion was made by Ziarko to adjourn, supported by Brown. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
