Library Board of Trustees Minutes of Meeting September 20, 2021 Sterling Heights Public Library 40255 Dodge Park Sterling Heights, MI 48313 586-446-2665 I. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Chris Frezza, Chair, at 5:36p.m. II. Roll Call Members Present: Shirley Cozort, Chris Frezza, Wendy Popko Members Excused: Terry Hojnacki, Stacy Ziarko III. Approval of Agenda Motion to approve the agenda was made by Cozort, seconded by Popko. Motion carried. IV. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve the minutes of the meeting of July 19, 2021 was made by Popko, seconded by Cozort. Motion carried. V. Communication from Citizens none VI. Monthly Reports, Statistics, and Correspondence A. Building-Wide Stats – FY2021 / FY2022 Board reviewed statistics. Numbers are increasing as more patrons feel comfortable coming back into the library building. B. Monthly Issues – July and August 2021 Board reviewed the monthly issues reports. Summer reading went well with increased participation over last year. There have been many staff changes due to retirements as well as PT staff leaving for FT positions at other libraries. Interviews are taking place to fill open positions. The Library’s open house went well to invite patrons back to the newly renovated building. C. Compliment/Complaint Forms Board reviewed compliments. Compliments received for the adult craft programs, the Mocktail program, the Creative Writers workshop (and Terry Hojnacki), the Friends’ Used but Sterling bookstore, the free fax service, the early literacy kits. Received staff compliments for Stephanie Fair, Carolyn Sherrill, as well as the entire staff. Board reviewed suggestions / complaints. Received suggestion to increase availability of the Maker Space to other dates/times. This will be changed for the winter programming season. Received suggestion to move the new books on CD to the new book shelves. This suggestion will be reviewed with staff. Received suggestion to put a recycling bin and holder for rubberbands by the holds shelving. This will be reviewed with staff. Received suggestion to create a list of new non-fiction books on the library catalog. The new items list can be narrowed down using limits in the library catalog. Received suggestion to remove all yellowing books from the library as they are toxic. Staff researched and determined that yellowing books do not provide a health risk. Received suggestion to add digital conversion equipment for patrons. This will be reviewed with staff. Received complaint about wording on new children’s entrance doors. This can not be changed. Received complaint about spotty wifi access. This was in transition during construction. Wifi is available throughout the building now. Received complaint about the new carpet smell. Received complaint about lack of public catalog computer on first floor. This will be done when a cable is installed underneath the stairs to accommodate the PC. Received complaint about only one printer being available for the public. This occurred during construction. There is one printer available for the public on each floor. Received complaint about the library’s new design and lack of welcoming feel. VII. Suburban Library Cooperative No report. VIII. Friends of the Library A. Bookstore Report Friends revenues since reopening in April are over $16,000 for bookstore sales, fundraisers, donations and memberships. IX. Unfinished Business A. Oktoberfest Sign up sheet was shared with Library Board and Friends Board to sell water and books during the festival. The Friends will have a 10 x 20 tent in Dodge Park to sell from. X. New Business A. Reconsideration of Library Materials Board received recommendation from the Materials Selection Committee regarding request from patron to move a book from the juvenile non-fiction section to the adult non-fiction section. Motion made by Popko to accept the recommendation from the Materials Selection Committee and weed the book due to lack of circulation, supported by Cozort. Motion carried. Board asked Turgeon to discuss with librarians if there is a need for a YA non-fiction section. XI. Adjourn Cozort was presented with a card to thank her for her time on the Library Board and to wish her well. She will continue to volunteer with the Friends of the Library. Motion was made by Cozort to adjourn, supported by Popko. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 6 p.m.
