TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2019
STERLING HEIGHTS YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
Location: 40555 Utica Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313
The Sterling Heights Youth Advisory Board Meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m.

A. Review Rules of Order / Meeting Conduct
• City Attorney Marc Kasubski reviewed the Rules of Orders and how a
meeting should be conducted for future meetings with the Youth Advisory
Board.
B. Selection of YAB Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary
• Korey Zelda and Miranda Davis both nominated themselves for the Youth
Advisory Chair. This was motioned by City Attorney Marc Kasubski. Rohit
Ray motioned for the appointment of Korey Zelda as the Chair, seconded
by Maxymilian Stefanski.
• Miranda Davis was appointed as the Vice Chair by Marc Kasubski.
• Rohit Ray and Genevieve Myers both nominated themselves for the Youth
Advisory Board Secretary position. Maxymilian Stefanski motioned to
support the appointment of Genevieve Myers to the position, seconded by
Ashley Popko.
C. Purpose of the Youth Advisory Board
• Marissa Russo, Youth Advisory Board liason, discussed in detail the
purpose of the Youth Advisory Board.
• The Youth Advisory Board will serve to promote youth involvement in local
government, increase civic engagement among youth, assist in
development of new youth programs, and advise City Council and City
Administration on youth and teen issues.
D. Upcoming year expectations and meeting schedule
• It was discussed that the YAB meetings will consist of guest speakers,
group discussions, and planning of activities, events, programs, etc.
• The YAB meetings will be held in the new Community Center upon its
completion.
• YAB members shall brainstorm programs, events, etc. that they wish to
incorporate in the community.
• The YAB members must conduct one public meeting that will be held in
May 2020.
• YAB must create, and present, a 5-year plan for the Youth Advisory Board.
E. Group Discussion on Focus Topics
• Sustainability: Ways to create easy access and more environmentally
friendly practices available throughout the City, i.e. more recycle bins in
parks.
• Police and Fire: Build a stonger reputation between our first responders
and the Sterling Heights youth, help break stereotypes, etc.
• Communication from the City to Younger Residents: Provide information to
the schools’ newsletters, explore other outlets more accessible to youth.
• Resources: Explore City resources available to the youth in the community
and help make these resources known. Also, think of new resources that
may not be available but many could benefit from.
