MINUTES FROM THE STREATOR PARKS & OPEN SPACES BOARD COUNCIL CHAMBERS - CITY HALL OFFICE 204 S BLOOMINGTON STREET STREATOR, IL 61364 - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 2024 CALL TO ORDER | Chairman Wheeler called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. ROLL CALL Members present: Tim Martin, Nora Sedlock, Doug Snell, Rob Tyne, and Chairman Gary Wheeler. Members absent: Afton Caulkins and Natalie Henderson. MINUTES – Approve minutes of the meeting on May 8, 2024. Chairman Wheeler requested a motion and second to approve the minutes from the May 8, 2024 meeting. MOTION: Snell made a motion to approve the above minutes; seconded by Sedlock. ROLL: Ayes: Martin, Sedlock, Snell, Tyne, and Chairman Wheeler. Absent: Caulkins and Henderson. PUBLIC COMMENTS |There were none. DISCUSSION ITEMS 1. MARILLA PARK OSLAD GRANT – UPDATE Jeff Long, Public Works Director, said the project will be started soon and might not be complete until next year. It goes out for bid next week. There are plans for two more shelters, a fishing dock, and an asphalt parking lot. 2. MARILLA PARK – LOGAN’S OASIS UPDATE Mayor Bedei reported the project has raised approximately $16,000 so far. The Board had questions regarding the location and design of the project. The mayor suggested we invite her to the next Park Board meeting. 3. MARILLA PARK DISC GOLF – Christopher Stone attended the August 7, 2024 to tell the Council he would like to add 3 more holes to the course. They have been fund-raising and would like the city to contribute funds for cement disc pads. Chris Stone was present at the City Council meeting to request three holes be added to the disc golf course at Marilla Park and reported that some money had been raised. Sedlock suggested that the Park Board reach out to him with questions and possibly even meet with him at Marilla Park. 4. JAMES STREET FOUNTAIN – UPDATE COMMENTS FROM BOARD MEMBERS Tim Martin – He gave an assessment of the Greenway Trail condition. Garbage not being emptied, 2 tent encampments, 1 working light on the trail, and 4 wheelers still using the trail. We could seal off the trail using telephone poles to keep the 4 wheelers out. The Police Department needs to monitor the situation on the trail. He also recommended the city look into the possibility of constructing 3-4 public pickleball courts. This sport has become very popular and communities all around have installed courts. Nora Sedlock – Nora seconded Tim’s suggestions. She reported the dam is damaged at Marilla Park from a tree that is down. She asked who is monitoring Anderson Golf Course. Have we looked into raising fees since the city has to fund this endeavor every year? She suggested we put pickleball courts at Anderson in the parking lot. Chairman Wheeler – Suggested we investigate the cost of installing pickleball courts and possibly make a recommendation to City Council. After further discussion about the City Parks, the board decided to recommend to the City Council that Bing Armstrong Park be eliminated as a playground due to safety/risk issues. The recommendation will go to City Council on August 21, 2024, for action. The board decided to meet again on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. which is the usual meeting time to discuss Park Board recommendations. Rob Tyne left the meeting at 6:57 P.M. ADJOURNMENT AT 7:02 P.M. Chairman Wheeler requested a motion and second to adjourn the meeting. MOTION: Snell made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Martin.
