Council Member Milteer offered the Invocation, and Boy Scout Troop #16 led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT CERTIFICATION City Clerk Dawley presented a resolution certifying the Closed Meeting of November 15, 2017, pursuant to Section 2.2-3712 of the Code of Virginia (1950), as amended. Council Member Fawcett, on a motion seconded by Council Member Duman, moved to approve the resolution, as presented, by the following vote: AYES: Mayor L. Scott Mills (ex officio alternate). Council Member Fawcett, on a motion seconded by Council Member Goldberg, moved to appoint the above referenced individuals to the aforementioned body, by the following vote: AYES: Mayor L. Johnson, Milteer and Ward 8 NAYS: None 0 ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMENTS Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, Media and Community Relations Director Diana Klink reported on the following: the Finance Department’s receipt of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association; the Suffolk Police Department’s Forensic Unit ANSI-ASQ Re-accreditation; Detective Rachelann Cain’s receipt of the Greater Hampton Roads Crime Line Top Cop Award; the Suffolk Police Department’s safe transaction zones; the Suffolk Clean Community Commission Keep Suffolk Beautiful Executive Board’s plastic bottle top campaign; the Suffolk Public Library’s Library Out Loud event; the Grand Illumination; the Suffolk Farmers’ Market; the 6th Annual Artisan Gift Fair; the Suffolk Police Department’s Stuff the Police Car event; the City’s observance of Thanksgiving; and the R(e)Stored Downtown Pop-Up Shop Initiative. Council Member Goldberg congratulated Tracey Agnew on her appointment as the Editor of the Suffolk News Herald. Council Member Goldberg reported to attend the following: the Suffolk Art League event; the Suffolk Sister Cities Commission Italian Supper; and the Healthy Suffolk Art of Supper Dinner Forum. Council Member Fawcett announced he attended the following: the Hampton Roads Radio Control Club Toy Drive event; the Greater Hampton Roads Crime Line Top Cop Banquet; Prayer Vigil hosted by Pastor Aaron Burgess and State of the Schools Breakfast and Learning Fair. Council Member Johnson acknowledged R.E. Spears, III as the outgoing Editor of the Suffolk News Herald. 4 City Council Regular Meeting November 15, 2017 Council Member Johnson congratulated Tracey Agnew on her appointment as the Editor of the Suffolk News Herald. Council Member Johnson acknowledged Boy Scout Troop #16 and the Sharpes. Council Member Johnson opined about the following: the Finance Department’s receipt of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association; the Suffolk Police Department’s safe transaction zones; and the services of the Suffolk Library System. Council Member Ward thanked the Sharpes for attending. Council Member Ward extended his condolences to the family of the late Grace Ward. Council Member Ward reported he attended the funeral of the late Israel Parker. Council Member Ward opined about the recent Commissioner of the Revenue election. Council Member Duman acknowledged Boy Scout Troop #16. Council Member Duman announced he attended the following: the Greater Hampton Roads Crime Line Top Cop Banquet; Prayer Vigil hosted by Pastor Aaron Burgess; and the football game between King’s Fork High School versus Oscar Smith High School. Council Member Duman encouraged residents to attend the LeOtis Williams Annual Turkey Giveaway and Suffolk Humane Society Pet Pantry. Council Member Duman announced the Suffolk Humane Society fundraiser at the Broken Egg Bistro. Vice Mayor Bennett acknowledged Boy Scout Troop #16 and the Sharpes who were in attendance. Vice Mayor Bennett congratulated Detective Rachelann Cain on her receipt of the Greater Hampton Roads Crime Line Top Cop Award. Vice Mayor Bennett congratulated Tracey Agnew on her appointment as the Editor of the Suffolk News Herald. Vice Mayor Bennett reported he attended the following: the Healthy Suffolk Art of Supper Dinner Forum and the State of the Schools Breakfast and Learning Fair. Vice Mayor Bennett encouraged residents to support the Salvation Army Fundraiser. Mayor Johnson acknowledged Boy Scout Troop #16. Mayor Johnson congratulated all of the winners in recent elections. Mayor Johnson announced she attended the Greater Hampton Roads Crime Line Top Cop Banquet. Mayor Johnson opined about the Suffolk Police Department’s safe transaction zones. 5 City Council Regular Meeting November 15, 2017 Mayor Johnson thanked Pastor Aaron Burgess for hosting the recent prayer vigil. Mayor Johnson congratulated Tracey Agnew on her appointment as the Editor of the Suffolk News Herald. Mayor Johnson announced the following upcoming events: Suffolk YMCA grand opening; the Grand Illumination; the LeOtis Williams Annual Turkey Giveaway; Suffolk Humane Society Pet Pantry; the Suffolk Farmer’s Market; the 6th Annual Artisan Gift Fair; the Suffolk Police Department’s Stuff the Police Car event and the R(e)Stored Downtown Pop-Up Shop Initiative.
