Council Member Milteer offered the Invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. FREEDOM OF INFORMATION CERTIFICATION City Clerk Dawley presented a resolution certifying the Closed Meeting of November 6, 2019, pursuant to Section 2.2-3712 of the Code of Virginia (1950), as amended. Council Member Fawcett, on a motion seconded by Council Member Milteer, moved to approve the resolution, as presented, by the following vote: AYES: Mayor L. Patricia Merica, 9300 Eclipse Drive, representing self, opined about environmental concerns in Eclipse. Kelly Hengler, 9345 Eclipse Drive, was not present when called. 3 City Council Regular Meeting November 6, 2019 NEW BUSINESS There were no items under this portion of the agenda. ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMENTS Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, Media and Community Relations Director Diana Klink reported on the following: ribbon cutting for Eagle Design Center; Human Resources Generalist Rita Ennis’ receipt of the Risk Management Excellence Award from the Virginia Risk Sharing Association; the Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department’s Inaugural Home of the Brave 5K; North Suffolk Recycling Drive; and Suffolk Police Department’s Open House. Council Member Johnson extended his condolence to the family of the late Herbert Briggs, the artist who designed the City logo. Council Member Johnson acknowledged Mr. Woodward and Ms. Merica who were in attendance. Council Member Ward announced he attended the funeral of the late Congressman Elijah Cummings. Council Member Ward congratulated Delegate-elect Clinton Jenkins and thanked Delegate S. Chris Jones for his service in the Virginia General Assembly. Council Member Ward reported he attended the ribbon cutting for Eagle Design Center. Council Member Ward opined about an article written by School Board Vice Chair Judith Brooks-Buck about new Suffolk Public Schools Superintendent John Gordon. Council Member Duman opined about the recent election results. Council Member Duman announced that he attended a recent meeting regarding the branding of downtown. Council Member Duman reported he attended the meet and greet for Suffolk Public Schools Superintendent John Gordon. Council Member Milteer opined about the recent election results. Council Member Fawcett acknowledged Human Resources Generalist Rita Ennis’ receipt of the Risk Management Excellence Award from the Virginia Risk Sharing Association. Council Member Fawcett announced he attended the ribbon cutting for Eagle Design Center. Council Member Fawcett opined about the upcoming Suffolk Police Department’s Open House. Council Member Fawcett opined about the new Suffolk Public Schools Superintendent John Gordon. Council Member Fawcett thanked Delegate S. Chris Jones for his service in the Virginia General Assembly and acknowledged Delegate-elect Clinton Jenkins on his election to the Virginia General Assembly. 4 City Council Regular Meeting November 6, 2019 Council Member Goldberg advised that the tree that was removed on North Saratoga Street was removed for a reason and would be replaced accordingly. Council Member Goldberg reported he attended the Genieve Shelter Annual Gala. Vice Mayor Bennett congratulated Delegate-elect Clinton Jenkins on his election to the Virginia General Assembly. Vice Mayor Bennett extended his condolences to City Attorney Holland to the recent deaths in her family. Vice Mayor Bennett opined about the new Suffolk Public Schools Superintendent John Gordon. Vice Mayor Bennett opined about the North Carolina State Fair. Mayor Johnson congratulated Delegate-elect Clinton Jenkins on his election to the Virginia General Assembly and thanked Delegate S. Chris Jones for his service in the Virginia General Assembly. Mayor Johnson reported on a meeting with Suffolk Public Schools Superintendent John Gordon, School Board Chair Phyllis Byrum, School Board Vice Chair Judith Brooks-Buck, and City Manager Roberts. Mayor Johnson acknowledged Human Resources Generalist Rita Ennis’ receipt of the Risk Management Excellence Award from the Virginia Risk Sharing Association. Mayor Johnson encouraged residents to participate in the Parks and Recreation Department’s Inaugural Home of the Brave 5K and the City’s various holiday events. Mayor Johnson announced she attended the ribbon cutting for Eagle Design Center.
