City Council Work Session August 16, 2017 Work Session of the Suffolk City Council was held in the City Council Chamber, 442 West Washington Street, on Wednesday, August 16, 2017, 6:00 p.m. PRESENT Council Members - Linda T. Johnson, Mayor, presiding Leroy Bennett, Vice Mayor Roger W. Fawcett Donald Z. Goldberg Timothy J. Johnson Curtis R. Milteer, Sr. Lue R. Ward, Jr. Patrick G. Roberts, City Manager Helivi L. Holland, City Attorney Erika S. Dawley, City Clerk ABSENT Michael D. Duman (excused) SUFFOLK EXECUTIVE AIRPORT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, Economic Development Director Kevin Hughes offered information on the Suffolk Executive Airport. Referring to the presentation, Council Member Milteer opined about recent funding announced by Congressman Donald McEachin for the Suffolk Executive Airport from the Federal Aviation Administration to rehabilitate 4,400 feet of existing runway pavement. Economic Development Director Hughes indicated that the City has already included this funding in the Capital Improvement Plan. Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation, Economic Development Director Kevin Hughes offered information on the economic development activity. Referring to the presentation, Vice Mayor Bennett opined about the desire for an ACE Hardware Store in Suffolk. Economic Development Director Hughes indicated that the City is continuing its efforts to recruit this company. 1 City Council Work Session August 16, 2017 City Clerk Dawley presented the Closed Meeting motion for City Council’s consideration: 1. Pursuant to Virginia Code Sections 2.2-3711(A)(8) and (A)(1), the consultation with legal counsel employed by a public body regarding specific legal matters requiring the legal advice of such counsel, and the discussion, consideration, or interviews of prospective candidates for appointment and the assignment, appointment, and performance of specific public officers or appointees of the City, specifically the appointments as shown on the attached list for vacancies or term expirations for Community Policy and Management Team, Fine Arts Commission, Historic Landmarks Commission, Library Advisory Board, Suffolk Clean Community Commission Keep Suffolk Beautiful Executive Board, Suffolk Clean Community Commission; and 2. Pursuant to Virginia Code Section 2.2-3711(A)(3), the discussion or consideration of the acquisition of real property for a public purpose, or of the disposition of publicly held real property, where discussion in an open meeting would adversely affect the bargaining position or negotiating strategy of the public body, specifically Open Space Land Acquisitions, Tax Map 19*39A and Tax 19*39E. Council Member Goldberg, on a motion seconded by Vice Mayor Bennett, moved that City Council convene in a closed meeting for the above referenced purposes, by the following roll call vote: AYES: Mayor L. Johnson, Vice Mayor Bennett, and Council Members Fawcett, Goldberg, T. Johnson, Milteer and Ward 7 NAYS: None 0 (Council Member Duman was excused.)
