CITY OF SUFFOLK ELECTORAL BOARD MINUTES OCTOBER 11, 2016 ______________________________________________________________________________ CALL TO ORDER: Les Ward, Chairman, called to order the meeting of the City of Suffolk Electoral Board at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at the Voter Registration Office, 440 Market Street, Suffolk, Virginia. ROLL CALL: The following persons were present: Les Ward, James Banks, Beverly Outlaw and Susan Saunders. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF LAST MINUTES: Ms. Saunders read the minutes from the September 15, 2016 meeting and Beverly Outlaw moved that the minutes be approved as read and Mr. Banks seconded the motion. OLD BUSINESS: Ms. Outlaw inquired as to the election official training dates, times and progress. Ms. Saunders replied with the number of trainings conducted to-date, as well as future dates and times of trainings. The trainings have been conducted in the City Council Chambers with visual aids, power point presentations and voting machine and electronic poll book demonstrations. Hands- on trainings have also been held in the Voter Registration Office for new officers of election and head electronic poll book officers. Ms. Outlaw asked how many absentee ballots have been requested and how many have been received to-date. Ms. Lawrence checked her records and responded that approximately 1,500 have been requested and we have received approximately 200 voted ballots as of today’s date. NEW BUSINESS: Les Ward commented that he would like to include instruction on carrying a concealed handgun with a permit and cell phone use in the precincts at the Chief and Assistant Chief training on October 24, 2016 and asked Ms. Saunders to prepare the appropriate material. Debbie George, Chief of Staff for the City of Suffolk and Major Brandeshese of the Suffolk Police Department made an appearance at the meeting and assured the Board that the Suffolk Police would be mindful of the locations of the polling sites and respond to problems as needed.  -2- Mr. Ward requested that Ms. Saunders have the Boards election day supply bags packed and ready to be picked up at the October 24, 2016 Chief and Assistant training and to please include a list of the precincts with the names of the Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs.
