Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee Meeting January 19, 2022 In person 9:00am Attendees: Chairman: Gene Brislin Members: John Mott, Sandy O’Keefe, John Thurmes, Ned Shows, Ben Hough Absent: Vincent Visitors/ public comment: Brian , Angelo Anastopoulo Call to Order: Chairman Gene Brislin 9:06am I. Acceptance of Minutes: Minutes from Nov 17thth John approved, Gene second II. Agenda Items: Special Workshop Meeting a. A special workshop meeting was held on Wednesday January 12 th to discuss priority items to present to the council in March also with the finance committee b. List of priority items from previous committee, come up with a figure we can request and make progress on the list that was created by the previous committee. c. Talk about the Vision of Bike/ Ped Summerville with council d. Review the GIS project with council e. Discuss a certain % of impact fees that could go towards Bike/ Ped, trails etc. f. Ask for support to fund 5-6 projects. g. As a group we will hold another workshop meeting to discuss what that # is, which projects are most important, crosswalks, sidewalks etc. h. Maintenance of existing sidewalks i. Next special meeting to solidify the priority list is February 9th 9:00am III. Visitor: Rick Rief- previous committee member 2015-2019 his background traffic engineer. a. Rick reviewed the priority list with the committee, ranked the projects based on list and where the existing committee felt needed priority. 1. Ranking was based on connectivity, safety, traffic count, speed, distance from sidewalks to the roads, cost. IV. Reviewed a few line items on the Priority list a. We discussed the projects that will be affected by the BGM project to be put on the lower priority list until the project is finished. b. Projects that developers will likely handle as they come in for review c. Will refer back to our Vision and cross reference with crosswalk list to see which is most important between crosswalk/ sidewalk safety and connectivity. V. GIS review a. Discussed gathering data of the sidewalks utilizing Run Go/ ride w gps and making it a community event. VI. Public comments: a. Brian is new to Summerville and asked about the guiding principles of the committee, we shared the vision of connectivity, safety to and from all points of town. More opportunities to bike. Walk in town to schools and using the trail as a centerpiece for recreational usage. b. Ned mentioned the city limits expanding to Nexton area and jumping on the opportunity to have influence on safety and connectivity before construction and building begins in that area. c. Ben mentioned the connectivity in the area of the BGM and Greenwave Blvd, for connection to the schools in the area. VII. Discussed the Sawmill Branch Trails alternate route during the BGM project, to reach out to Kevin at SCDOT to find out if they finalized the plan and when we can share it with the community.
