City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes Arts Commission Wednesday, April 19, 2017 7:00 PM Neighborhood Room - Recreation Center, Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94087 CALL TO ORDER Chair Koppel called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. in the Neighborhood Room. SALUTE TO THE FLAG Chair Koppel led the salute to the flag. ROLL CALL Commissioner Lawson's absence is unexcused. Council Liaison Griffith (present) Present: 4 - Chair David Koppel Vice Chair Roberta Kiphuth Commissioner Dustin Nguyen Commissioner Susannah Vaughan Absent: 1 - Commissioner Robert Lawson PRESENTATION 17-0475 Leadership Sunnyvale Art Map Project Leadership Sunnyvale students, Rob Lofland, Juliet Inoue, Murali Srinivasan, Anat Iyer and Jean Chen, presented their art map project. The students created a web based prototype art map that lists art pieces at various locations throughout the City. The art map provides a description of the art work, the location and directions to each piece of art work. Commissioners inquired about the accessibility to the art work's locations, embedding the art map into a City web page and offered various methods to promote the art map. Commissioners also expressed their appreciation for the project and encouraged the City to incorporate the art map into the City's website. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes April 19, 2017 CONSENT CALENDAR 1.A 17-0477 Approval of Draft Meeting Minutes of March 15, 2017 Commissioner Kiphuth moved and Commissioner Vaughan seconded the motion to approve the Consent Calendar as presented. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 3 - Chair Koppel Vice Chair Kiphuth Commissioner Vaughan No: 0 Absent: 1 - Commissioner Lawson Abstain: 1 - Commissioner Nguyen PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 17-0373 Review Proposal to Assist the Department of Library and Community Services (LCS) with the Design and Implementation of the 2017 Library Cart Art Contest Administrative Librarian, Steve Sloan, presented the Library's Cart Art Contest. The contest is an opportunity to promote art within the Library. Artists of all ages would be invited to submit original artwork that could be converted to decals and used to decorate the shelving carts. The Department of Library and Community Services is proposing to work with two members of the Arts Commission in the design, implementation and promotion of the contest. The Arts Commissioners would work with City staff, representatives of the Board of Library Trustees and the Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library on the planning. The proposed contest would be launched to coincide with the National Arts and Humanities Month in October 2017. Commissioners inquired about the use of magnetic decals instead of adhesive ones and suggested possible themes and promotional ideas for the contest. Both Vice Chair Kiphuth and Commissioner Vaughan volunteered to be on the planning team for the contest. Chair Koppel opened the item for public comment, and there being no public comments, closed the item for public comment. City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes April 19, 2017 3 17-0476 Public Art Master Plan Update Community Services Manager, Trenton Hill, provided an update on the Public Art Master Plan. The City selected The Cultural Planning Group as the consultant to create the Public Art Master Plan. The consultant will provide the City with recommendations on how to utilize existing and future funding identified for Public Art, develop standards and criteria for public projects as well as develop a community engagment plan. Commissioners inquired about the Request for Proposals process that included a 5 person interview panel. Chair Koppel opened the item for public comment, and there being no public comments, closed the item for public comment. STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES None. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Chair Koppel discussed his involvement in the upcoming Hands on the Arts Festival and Commissioners expressed their interest in both the Library's Art Carts Contest and the Leadership Sunnyvale student's art map project that were presented earlier. -Staff Comments Community Services Manager, Trenton Hill, announced Sunnyvale Theater season tickets are on sale.
