City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Arts Commission Wednesday, November 15, 2017 7:00 PM Laurel Room - Senior Center, Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94087 CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Vaughan called the meeting at 7:03 p.m. SALUTE TO THE FLAG Vice Chair Vaughan led the salute to the flag. CONSENT CALENDAR 1.A 17-1093 Approve the Arts Commission Meeting Minutes of October 18, 2017 Commissioner Laird moved, Commissioner Kiphuth seconded, approval of the consent calendar as presented. The motion was carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Vice Chair Vaughan Commissioner Eskridge Commissioner Kiphuth Commissioner Laird City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes - Final November 15, 2017 No: 0 Absent: 1 - Chair Koppel PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 17-1057 Annual Review of Code of Ethics and Conduct for Elected and Appointed Officials The Commission reviewed the 2017 Code of Ethics and Conduct for Elected and Appointed Officials. Commissioner Kiputh moved and Commissioner Laird seconded, approval of the 2017 Code of Ethics and Conduct for Elected and Appointed Officials as presented. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Vice Chair Vaughan Commissioner Eskridge Commissioner Kiphuth Commissioner Laird No: 0 Absent: 1 - Chair Koppel 3 17-1082 Community Center Infrastructure Project Update Community Services Superintendent, Dan Wax, provided a presentation and overview of the Community Center infrastructure project. The overview identified the project components that are being upgraded and the collaborative efforts between City departments. Commissioners inquired about the activities that are held in the Indoor Sports Center, pool locations, the impact of construction on recreation programming, ADA compliance and the Park Dedication Fund being used for construction. Superintendent Wax indicated activities at the Indoor Sports Center include volleyball, badminton, pickleball and gymnastics. There is not a pool in the Indoor Sports Center, however, the City offers recreational swimming and various aquatic programs at four community pools; Sunnyvale Middle School, Columbia Middle School, Fremont High School and Washington Park. In addition, the Indoor Sports Center has been used for Hands on the Arts Festival and can be used as an emergency shelter. Due to the construction, some of the recreation programs were cancelled. However, a majority were rescheduled or relocated to other locations on campus. Construction for ADA compliance was completed in the restrooms, lockers and the elevator to the mezzanine in the Indoor Sports Center. STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES None. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Commissioner Laird asked about the Art on the Cart contest and the community scavenger hunt idea that was suggested at a previous Arts Commission meeting. Vice Chair Vaughan indicated the Art on the Cart contest was a great success. The Library received 56 entries in multiple categories and is currently in the process of notifying the contest winners. An Art on the Cart Community Reception will be held on December 17. Superintendent Wax inquired if the scavenger hunt was the idea the Commissioners wanted to pursue or if Commissioners preferred to have City staff present some additional ideas at a future Commission meeting. Commissioners were in favor of staff bringing several ideas including the scavenger hunt to an upcoming Commission meeting. -Staff Comments Community Services Manager, Trenton Hill, announced an Evening of Cultural Arts performance by the Canote Brothers on November 25 and the Pottery Sale on December 15 and 16. Superintendient Wax indicated additional details for the Master Plan for Public Art and the draft workplan for the Arts Commission will be provided at a future meeting.
