3 17-1082 Community Center Infrastructure Project Update
Community Services Superintendent, Dan Wax, provided a presentation and
overview of the Community Center infrastructure project. The overview identified the
project components that are being upgraded and the collaborative efforts between
City departments.
Commissioners inquired about the activities that are held in the Indoor Sports
Center, pool locations, the impact of construction on recreation programming, ADA
compliance and the Park Dedication Fund being used for construction.
Superintendent Wax indicated activities at the Indoor Sports Center include
volleyball, badminton, pickleball and gymnastics. There is not a pool in the Indoor
Sports Center, however, the City offers recreational swimming and various aquatic
programs at four community pools; Sunnyvale Middle School, Columbia Middle
School, Fremont High School and Washington Park. In addition, the Indoor Sports
Center has been used for Hands on the Arts Festival and can be used as an
emergency shelter. Due to the construction, some of the recreation programs were
cancelled. However, a majority were rescheduled or relocated to other locations on
campus. Construction for ADA compliance was completed in the restrooms, lockers
and the elevator to the mezzanine in the Indoor Sports Center. The Park Dedication

Commissioner Laird asked about the Art on the Cart contest and the community
scavenger hunt idea that was suggested at a previous Arts Commission meeting.
Vice Chair Vaughan indicated the Art on the Cart contest was a great success. The
Library received 56 entries in multiple categories and is currently in the process of
notifying the contest winners. An Art on the Cart Community Reception will be held
on December 17.
Superintendent Wax inquired if the scavenger hunt was the idea the Commissioners
wanted to pursue or if Commissioners preferred to have City staff present some
additional ideas at a future Commission meeting.
Commissioners were in favor of staff bringing several ideas including the scavenger
hunt to an upcoming Commission meeting.
