ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Sunnyvale art teacher, Cindi Sweet, shared her school's project idea titled,
“Sunnyvale Power Box Project”. The project consists of King's Academy students
painting their artwork on City owned utility boxes. Mrs. Sweet indicated the project
would be a benefit to both the community and the students. The project will engage
students in creating community art, recognize that their contribution and creativity
matters and generate community pride. The benefits to the community include
adding beauty to neighborhoods, deter graffiti on the utility boxes and creates an
interesting environment for pedestrians and commuters. In addition, Mrs. Sweet
provided examples of other local cities including San Jose, Campbell and Redwood
City that have done this project, and believes this project will connect students with
the Sunnyvale community through the creation of public art.
Commissioners inquired about the ages of the students, and if the City allows
painting of utility boxes.
Mrs. Sweet indicated the students were high school age. Superintendent Wax
stated that staff would have to collaborate with other City departments to identify
City owned utility boxes.

an overview of the Community Services Division's Volunteer Program. Staff
indicated that the City has 930 active volunteers and the Community Services
Division has 675 active volunteers. Overall, the Community Services Division has
the largest amount of the active volunteers with 73% of the City’s volunteers.

must be at least 13 years of age and provide parental consent. Volunteers over 18
years of age are required by law to be fingerprinted.
Staff encouraged Commissioners to share their thoughts and ideas for promoting

provide information and referrals for volunteer opportunities. Commissioner Kiphuth
suggested reaching out to corporations to recruit volunteers.
