City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Arts Commission Wednesday, March 21, 2018 7:00 PM Laurel Room - Senior Center, Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Dr., Sunnyvale, CA 94087 CALL TO ORDER Superintendent Wax called the meeting to order at 7:09 p.m. in the Senior Center, Laurel Room. SALUTE TO THE FLAG Superintendent Wax led the salute to the flag. ROLL CALL Present: 3 - Commissioner Dawna Eskridge Commissioner Roberta Kiphuth Commissioner Darien Laird Absent: 1 - Vice Chair Susannah Vaughan Chair Vaughan (excused) Council Liaison Griffith (present) Due to the excused absence of Chair Vaughan, Supertintendent Wax requested a nomination for Temporary Chair for the Arts Commission meeting. Commissioner Laird nominated Commissioner Kiphuth as Temporary Chair for this meeting. No further nominations were mentioned and Superintendent Wax declared nominations closed. Commissioner Kiphuth was selected as Temporary Chair by unanimous vote. City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes - Final March 21, 2018 ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Speaker Serg Rudaz addressed the Commission on a State Initiative from the League of Women Voters (LWV) on Schools and Communities First - Proposition 13 Reform and provided Commissioners with an informational handout. If Commissioners would like to see this initiative on the November ballot, please write to action@lwvcs.org. CONSENT CALENDAR 1 18-0271 Approve the Arts Commission Meeting Minutes of February, 21, 2018 Commissioner Eskridge moved and Temporary Chair Kiphuth seconded to approve the Arts Commission meeting minutes of February 21, 2018 as submitted. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 3 - Commissioner Eskridge Commissioner Kiphuth Commissioner Laird No: 0 Absent: 1 - Vice Chair Vaughan PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 18-0268 Hands on the Arts Festival Community Services Coordinator, Kristin Dance presented a project idea that had been proposed during the Arts Commission meeting on February 21, 2018 to develop the Mother Earth Project to take place during the upcoming Hands on the Arts Festival. The festival will be held on May 19, 2018 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Community Center. Ms. Dance offered a volunteer opportunity to the Commission to assist with creating a design or template for the Parachutes for the Planet which is part of the Mother Earth Project. The Parachutes for the Planet project is focused on raising environmental awareness and activating sustainable communities through artwork. The project is accepting 200 parachutes created from communities all over the world and when completed will be exhibited in Washington, DC. The children attending the Hands on the Arts Festival would help create one parachute measuring 12 feet in diameter. The finished parachute would be displayed in the community before it is submitted for possible inclusion in the Parachutes for the Planet project. Commissioners expressed their availability. City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes - Final March 21, 2018 3 18-0269 Community Art Projects Community Services Manager, Trenton Hill and Community Services Coordinator, Kristin Dance provided an overview of the Public Art Programs in Sunnyvale. The overview included pictures of the art pieces around Sunnyvale and information on: - Art in Public Development (AIPD) - Art in Public Places (AIPP) - Permanent Art Collection STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES None NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Commissioner Laird inquired about a community scavenger hunt as an option to explore. Staff may consider the suggestion in the future. -Staff Comments Superintendent Wax updated the Commission on the school project idea from Ms. Sweet to paint utility boxes. At this time, the City cannot endorse or sponsor this project idea as some utility boxes are the property of PG&E or other entities. Once completed, the City's Master Plan for Public Art may include recommendations in which the Arts Commission can become engaged such as utility box art projects. Superintendent Wax offered to share the updated presentation that Ms. Sweet provided and if commissioners are interested in participating they can reach out to Ms. Sweet directly.
