PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS
2 23-0325 Hands on the Arts Festival (Finalize Project & Plans)
Recreation Services Coordinator, Kristin Dance, provided a presentation on the
Hands on the Arts Festival to finalize project and plans. Staff reviewed art projects
such as river of rocks, totems, shakers, strawberry basket wind chimes, and tribal
masks.
Commissioners inquired and staff responded:
Could the tribal masks and shakers be a cause of concern for cultural
appropriation? We would need to be thoughtful about how we name and market the
project.
Chair Eskidge noted that the tribal masks and shakers were suggested since they
offered a cultural component as the Hands on the Arts Festival is combined with
Culture Fest this year.
Commissioners ranked the art projects as follows:
1. River of rocks
2. Shakers
3. Strawberry basket wind chimes
4. Tribal masks
5. Totems
Commissioner Veith moved and Vice Chair Lam seconded the motion to adopt
the ranking as provided. The motion carried by the following vote:
