Is this a statistically significant difference? - Regarding the study of vehicle velocities and speeds, what will you do with this data? Is the purview of this study to lower or raise the speed limit? Mr. Trujillo, addressed the questions. Commissioner Mehlman asked about the following: - Of the 10 total bicycle collisions, we only had information on 5 of them. What was the reason for that? - Of the 5 pedestrian collisions, what were their locations? Were any of them in the specific study area? - What were the factors of the collisions? - For the vehicle collisions, do you have a breakdown in terms of factors like speed, driver attention, etc. Mr. Trujillo, addressed the questions. Commissioner Hafeman asked about the following: - In your future study of the bike traffic that's on the roadway, will you be able to determine how much of that is students getting to and from school? - Regarding one of the parked car accidents, was somebody backing out of the driveway? Lillian Tsang, Principal Transportation Engineer and Mr. Trujillo, addressed the questions. Commissioner Wilson asked about the following: - Under what conditions would you consider widening a road so that it is safe for City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Meeting Minutes - Final September 19, 2024 Commission bikes? - What conditions recommend new improvements to the road? Ms. Tsang and Mr. Trujillo, addressed the questions. Commissioner Gollakota asked about the following: - Do we have any idea if students use this street for commuting to school? - Does the collision data give us an idea of how many are these are kids? Mr. Trujillo, addressed the questions. Chair Beagle asked about the following: - City staff could perform this study and end up with the recommendation for a no build alternative, right? - Are there portions of Hollenbeck Avenue that don't have sidewalks? - Do buses go down Hollenbeck Avenue here? - Was visibility obscured by parked cars for the incident with the pedestrian on the sidewalk? - Is there potential for a protected intersection at Fremont Avenue? Ms.Tsang and Mr. Trujillo, addressed the questions. Public Comment opened at 7:24 p.m. Kevin Jackson, member of the public, commented on the following: - Concerned with the width of the recommended bike lane - Suggests Sunnyvale either switch to one foot gutters or make curbside bike lanes a minimum of 6 feet wide Sharlene Liu, member of the public, commented on the following: - Concerned that the bike lane width will be too narrow on Hollenbeck Avenue - Recommends the city follows Valley Transit Authority (VTA) bicycle technical guidelines Daniel Karpelevitch, member of the public, commented on the following: - Concerned with the standards of current bike lanes and the City's method of measuring the demand - Suggests traffic calming down the street until it's sub 20 miles per hour - Alternatively, remove one of the sides of the on-street parking and remove center City of Sunnyvale Page 3 Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Meeting Minutes - Final September 19, 2024 Commission median lane Nick Brosnahan, member of the public, commented on the following: - Referenced City general plan policy LT-3.10 stating that the City should prioritize street space allocated for transportation uses over parking when determining appropriate future use of street space - Hopes the City considered redesigning Fremont and Hollenbeck avenues intersection as the current quadruple slip lane is unsafe for everyone including car drivers Public Comment closed at 7:38 p.m. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Public Comment opened at 8:05 p.m. Chair Beagle announced the Charter Review Committee recruitment.
