City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes Sustainability Commission Monday, September 16, 2024 7:00 PM Online and Bay Conference Room, City Hall, 456 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086 CALL TO ORDER Chair Veitch called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. in the Bay Conference Room (Room 145) at City Hall. SALUTE TO THE FLAG Chair Veitch led the salute to the flag. ROLL CALL Present: 7 - Chair Tonya Veitch Vice Chair Jeffery Nabhan Commissioner Cortney Jansen Commissioner Douglas Kunz Commissioner Bobbykin Makwana Commissioner Richard Parenteau Commissioner Kristina Pistone Council Liaison - Councilmember Melingher (absent) Council Liaison - Mayor Klein (present) PRESENTATION 24-0710 PRESENTATION - Zero Waste Program Update Shikha Gupta, Solid Waste Division Manager, and Deepti Jain, Solid Waste Environmental Programs Manager, provided an update on Zero Waste Programs and SMaRT® Station upgrades in Sunnyvale. Commissioners asked clarifying questions, and staff provided answers. 24-0993 PRESENTATION - Recycled Water Master Plan Update Ramana Chinnakotla, Director of Environmental Services, and Mansour Nasser, Water & Sewer Systems Division Manager, provided an update on the Recycled City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes September 16, 2024 Water Master Plan in Sunnyvale. Commissioners asked clarifying questions and offered input, and staff provided answers. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 24-0746 Approve the Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes of August 19, 2024 Commissioner Kunz moved, and Commissioner Pistone seconded, a motion to approve the consent calendar. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 7 - Chair Veitch Vice Chair Nabhan Commissioner Jansen Commissioner Kunz Commissioner Makwana Commissioner Parenteau Commissioner Pistone No: 0 STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES 24-0994 Working with Partner Cities in Santa Clara County for addition of Medium-duty and Heavy-duty truck Hydrogen Fueling Station (potential Study Issue) Christina Raby, Interim Environmental Programs Manager, presented the Commission with an option to revisit the potential Study Issue, "Working with Partner Cities in Santa Clara County for addition of Medium-duty and Heavy-duty truck Hydrogen Fueling Station." Chair Veitch requested to wait until the October 28 meeting to discuss and vote on the potential Study Issue. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Commissioner Pistone shared National Public Radio’s (NPR) Climate Week series and recommended Commissioners visit NPR’s page to read the articles and find City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes September 16, 2024 useful resources. Commissioner Parenteau recommended that Commissioners read a Washington Post article on artificial turf being removed at schools. Chair Veitch announced the September 21, 2024, State of the City event located at City Hall and encouraged Commissioners to attend. Mayor Klein invited Commissioners to Sunnyvale’s State of the City event and provided details on the event schedule. Mayor Klein also gave updates on an artificial turf ban item that the City Council discussed in August, the Redwood Square open space project in downtown Sunnyvale and the status of Caltrain’s newly operational all-electric trains. -Staff Comments Ms. Raby reported on past and upcoming events.
