City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Board of Library Trustees Monday, April 7, 2014 7:00 PM Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: 6 - Board Member Daniel Bremond Vice Chair Anne Davis-East Board Member Narendra Pathak Chair Jill Shanmugasundaram Board Member Su "Ray" Zhan Jim Davis PRESENTATION 14-0410 PRESENTATION - Teen Advisory Committee Teen Advisory Committee (TAC) Vice President Aleksandra Popovic provided the Board with a presentation that highlighted the committee's role, responsibilities and community participation. Boardmembers thanked the committee for their service and involvement in the community. PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 1 14-0411 Draft Minutes of the Board of Library Trustees Meeting of February 3, 2014 Boardmember Pathak moved, and Vice Chair Davis-East seconded, approval of the consent calendar as presented. Motion carried unanimously. City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes - Final April 7, 2014 PUBLIC COMMENTS None. PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 14-0412 Study Issues Director Rosenblum provided the Board with an overview of the Study Issues process and inquired if the Board would like to recommend a Study Issue for calendar year 2015. Discussion ensued regarding a Library Dedication Fee Study Issue. Director Rosenblum answered Boardmembers questions regarding library advocacy and presentations to Council, Boards and or Commissions. Chair Shanmugasundaram opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing. 3 14-0413 Day in the District Chair Shanmugasundaram provided the Board with an overview of the Day in the District event she attended in March with Assemblymember Gordon. Key items discussed with Assemblymember Gordan included: Public Library Fund, Broadband Initiative and Public Works Bond that would lower the approval threshold to 55% for public works projects. Chair Shanmugasundaram opened the publc hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing. 4 14-0414 National Library Week Director Rosenblum noted that Sunday, April 13 through Saturday, April 19 is National Library Week. Activities for the week include: Celebrity Story Time, Digital Photo Booth, Chalk Art in the Library Plaza, Sunday Music Series and Fire Truck and Police Car Meet and Greet. Director Rosenblum encouraged Boardmembers to participate in activities during the week. Chair Shanmugasundaram opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies closed the public hearing. City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes - Final April 7, 2014 5 14-0415 Branch Library Director Rosenblum noted that the sale of the Raynor Facility has been delayed due to a lawsuit filed by residents claiming the City violated the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Staff answered Boardmembers questions regarding services to North Sunnyvale. Director Rosenblum mentioned that Librarians will be hosting Thursday storytimes at Lakewood Park during the month of May. Chair Shanmugasundaram opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS Boardmember Bremond provided the Board with an overview of his visit to the National Library of France. He also provided the Board with an overview of the California Public Library Advocates Workshop he attended on Saturday, March 22. Vice Chair Davis-East provided the Board with an overview of the Declaration for the Right to Libraries and suggested it be a part of National Library Week. Boardmember Pathak shared with staff positive feedback he has received regarding the Library's reading programs. City of Sunnyvale Page 3 Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes - Final April 7, 2014 STAFF COMMENTS Director Rosenblum noted the following: The Library was highlighted in the recent issue of the Quarterly Report. An article regarding the Library's 3D Printer will be published in an upcoming issue of the Sunnyvale Sun. Demand for children’s materials and children’s programs at the Sunnyvale Public Library continues to increase. Eight years ago, children’s materials accounted for 38% of total checkouts, compared to 45% in FY 2012/13. Volunteers from the Computer and Communication Industry Association and the Intuit Financial Freedom Foundation helped more than 85 people file their taxes for free at the Library on Wednesday, March 12. This was the seventh year the Library has participated in this event. The wireless printing system at the Library, called PrinterOn, was recently upgraded to allow patrons to print by using a web page, an email, or the PrinterOn app available on Android and iOS devices. The Library launched the Boopsie mobile app. Boopsie will allow customer to view numerous Sunnyvale Library webpages on their mobile devices. The Board will be reviewing the proposed FY 2015/16 and 2016/17 budget at thier Special Meeting scheduled for Monday, May 19.
