City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Board of Library Trustees Monday, December 7, 2015 7:00 PM Library Program Room, Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: 4 - Chair Jill Shanmugasundaram Vice Chair Carey Wingyin Lai Board Member Mark Isaak Board Member Erika Torres Absent: 1 - Board Member Daniel Bremond Council Liaison Jim Griffith (present). Vice Chair Lai moved, and Board Member Isaak seconded, to excuse Board Member Bremond's absence from the December meeting. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Chair Shanmugasundaram Vice Chair Lai Board Member Isaak Board Member Torres No: 0 Absent: 1 - Board Member Bremond PRESENTATION None. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Chair Shanmugasundaram mentioned that the Board/Commission agendas have been revised to consolidate "Public Announcements" and "Public Comments" to one section called "Oral Communications". City of Sunnyvale Page 1 Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes - Final December 7, 2015 CONSENT CALENDAR 1 15-1056 Approval of Draft Minutes of October 5, 2015 Board Member Torres moved, and Vice Chair Lai seconded, approval of the consent calendar as presented. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Chair Shanmugasundaram Vice Chair Lai Board Member Isaak Board Member Torres No: 0 Absent: 1 - Board Member Bremond PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS 2 15-1057 Community Condition Indicators Interim Director Cain provided the Board with an overview of the Library’s community condition indicators over the past ten years. Interim Director Cain commented that the circulation of children’s materials continues to increase. This past fiscal year, children's circulation accounted for 50.7% of total library circulation. Board Members inquired regarding decrease in overall library circulation and size of children's and teen's area. Interim Director Cain indicated that one possible reason for decrease in circulation is customers are searching for answers via online resources. She also commented that staff is in the process of increasing the children's area; however, change is limited due to size and/or layout of building. Interim Director Cain also commented that the number of patent applications submitted by Sunnyvale residents continues to increase. Chair Shanmugasundaram opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing. City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes - Final December 7, 2015 3 15-1058 Sunnyvale Library Comparative Data Interim Director Cain provided the Board with a brief overview of the Library’s usage over the past six years. She commented that the number of total programs presented decreased; however, total program attendance has increased by 20% over the past two years. She also noted increases in the circulation of digital resources and the use of the Library by children of all ages. Discussion ensued regarding InterLibrary Loan, decrease in reader seats and staffing levels. Chair Shanmugasundaram opened the public hearing, and there being no public testimonies, closed the public hearing. STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES None. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Board Member Comments Chair Shanmugasundaram welcomed Mark Isaak to the Board of Library Trustees. -Staff Comments Interim Director Cain noted the following: - Public Libraries Online recently published an article highlighting Sunnyvale Library's Make-HER Program which enourages young women to take a more active interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). - A group of 60 avid fans of "The Martian" attended a live video conferencing event featuring author Any Weir on November 10. - The Sunnyvale Library received a $5,000 grant from the California State Library to turn an unused office in the Library into a new sewing lab named "The Stitch". - Beginning in January, the Sunnyvale Library will be starting bilingual storytimes in a variety of languages. Spanish and English stories and songs will be presented at Columbia Middle School Library every other week on Wednesdays beginning January 6 at 3:30 p.m. Teachers from Petits Cofettis French Preschool will offer monthly storytimes on Thursdays at the Library beginning January 7 at 10:15 a.m. Chinese stories will be presented at the Library on January 17 at 2:30 p.m. - This month the Sunnyvale Library's internet speed will increase by connecting to a new broadband high speed connection on its public PCs and Wi-Fi network. The service is being offered by CENIC's CalREN (California Research and Education Network). CENIC is the Corporation for Education Network Initiative in California, a non-profit organization with the goal of advancing education and reaseach throughout California.
