City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Board of Library Trustees Monday, April 1, 2019 7:00 PM Library Program Room, Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94086 CALL TO ORDER Chair Lai called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: 5 - Chair Carey Wingyin Lai Vice Chair Daniel Bremond Board Member Tina Hwang Board Member Mark Isaak Board Member Sharlene Wang Council Liaison Fong (absent) PRESENTATION 19-0382 2019 National Library Week Activities Director of Library and Community Services Cynthia Bojorquez introduced Superintendent of Libraries Steve Sloan. Superintendent Sloan provided the Board with an overview of National Library Week. Beginning April 7, the Library has ongoing events scheduled such as "Behind The Scenes Tours", celebrity storytime with Mayor Larry Klein and Department of Public Safety Chief Phan Ngo, outreach event featuring the Library's B.I.K.E. at City Hall, and Book Spine Poetry. City Council will formally recognize National Library Week with a Special Order of the Day on April 9. The Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library will be honored at Council with a proclamation. Director Bojorquez invited the Board to come to the City Council meeting on April 9 to honor the Friends. 19-0383 Overview of Recent Library Program and Facilities Improvements Superintendent Sloan gave an overview of the recent library program and facilities improvements. Staff responded that should there be an interest in doing a fundraiser, staff would recommend working through the Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library as resource development for the Library is one of their primary functions. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. CONSENT CALENDAR 1 19-0211 Approve the Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes of March 4, 2019. Vice Chair Bremond moved, and Board Member Isaak seconded, approval of the Board of Library Trustees minutes of March 4, 2019 as submitted. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 4 - Chair Lai Vice Chair Bremond Board Member Isaak Board Member Wang No: 0 Abstain: 1 - Board Member Hwang STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES None. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Board Member Comments None. -Staff Comments Director Bojorquez informed the Board of the following: -Council approved three proposed Library and Community Services Study Issues for 2019: Consider Options for Establishing an Amnesty Program for Overdue Library Material Fines; Explore Strategies to Promote Cultural Inclusion in City Programs and Services; and Options and Benefits of Establishing a Library Foundation City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Board of Library Trustees Meeting Minutes - Final April 1, 2019 -The California State Library awarded Sunnyvale Public Library $4,500 to provide "Library Pop-Up" programming in Summer 2019. The Library programming will take place at parks adjacent to three summer meal school sites in Sunnyvale (San Miguel Elementary, Lakewood Elementary and Columbia Middle). -Thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library, patrons will soon enjoy expanded technology programs with the addition of 18 new ChromeBooks. -Staff has determined that the Guinness World record attempt for "Most People Balancing Books on their Heads" is not viable given all the restrictions. As an alternative, staff is working on a "Space Camp" program to align with this year's Summer Reading Program. -The California State Library, in partnership with the Nevada State Library, has awarded Sunnyvale Public Library one of ten scholarships for the NASA STEM Workshop in Nevada. -Vacant full-time and part-time Librarian positions have been filled. The new staff will start on April 29. -ACA-1 passed out of committee. Staff will continue to monitor this legislation as it moves forward.
