CALL TO ORDER
Superintendent Dan Wax called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. in the Council
Chambers.
SALUTE TO THE FLAG
Superintendent Wax led the salute to the flag.
ROLL CALL
Superintendent Wax noted that Chair Alexander III and Vice Chair Kenton will not
be in attendance. Therefore, a temporary chair will need to be elected.
Superintendent Wax opened nominations for a temporary chair. Commissioner
Pasqua nominated Commissioner Pochowski who accepted the nomination. No
further nominations were presented.

Temporary Chair Pochowski welcomed newly appointed Council Liaison Melton.
Council Liaison Melton thanked the Commission and provided a brief introduction
about himself.

CONSENT CALENDAR
1.A 17-0044 Approve the Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting
Minutes of November 9, 2016
Commissioner Gabashvili moved, and Commissioner Pasqua seconded, approval
of the Consent Calendar as presented. The motion was carried by the following
vote:

PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS
2 17-0049 Community Services Division Volunteer Program
Community Services Coordinator, Alisha Rodrigues, provided the Commission with
an overview of the Community Services Division's Volunteer Program.
The City has 1,057 active volunteers. The Community Services Division has 680
active volunteers. The Division has the largest amount of the active volunteers with
64% of the City’s volunteers.
Commissioners inquired about volunteer recruitment and mentorship programs.
Staff stated volunteer recruitments are posted on the City's website and publicized
at various events. Currently, Community Services does not offer mentorship
programs, however, Staff will inquire with the Library Division to determine if they
offer mentorship programs.

Temporary Chair Pochowski opened the public hearing, and there being no public
comments, closed the public hearing.
3 17-0050 Parks Division Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP)
Superintendent Stark provided an overview of the Parks Division Urban Forest
Management Plan (UFMP)
UFMP is a long-term plan to manage, preserve and protect the City's urban forest.
A key component of the UFMP involves fostering community engagement and
working with advocacy groups. Staff has proposed a Capitol Improvement Project
to implement a software program that will efficiently track inventory and monitor City
trees.
Commissioners inquired about the tree canopy coverage and if the recent drought
had an impact on the health of City trees. Staff stated trees provide 21% canopy
coverage in Sunnyvale. The drought impacted the health of some of the City’s
redwood trees.
Temporary Chair Pochowski opened the public hearing, and there being no public
comments, closed the public hearing.
4 17-0045 Review Draft 2017 Work Plan Calendar
Superintendent Wax provided the Commission with an overview of the Draft 2017
Work Plan Calendar. Additionally, he provided possible items that may be included:
- California Sports Center Amendment
- Animal Assisted Happiness at Baylands Park
- Orchard Heritage Museum Update
- Vale Development Park Project
- Capitol Improvement Projects
- Urban Forest Management Plan
- Community Engagement

comments, closed the public hearing.

Murphy Park to review final design plans for a new park.
