City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Parks and Recreation Commission Wednesday, October 12, 2022 7:00 PM Telepresence Meeting: City Web Stream CALL TO ORDER Pursuant to Government Code Subdivision 54953(e), the meeting was conducted telephonically; pursuant to state law, the City Council made the necessary findings by adopting Resolution No. 1089-21, reaffirmed on September 27, 2022. Vice Chair Dibb called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. via teleconference. ROLL CALL Present: 4 - Chair Prakash Giri Vice Chair Gregory Dibb Commissioner Daniel Bremond Commissioner David Kesting Absent: 1 - Commissioner Dona Mason Commissioner Mason (excused absence) Council Liaison Cisneros (absent) PRESENTATION A 22-0980 Active Aging Month & Senior Program Report Recreation Services Manager, Trenton Hill, provided a presentation on Active Aging Month & Senior Program Report. Commissioners inquired and staff responded: Has staff explored story telling? No, but will definitely look into it. Story telling will be a great way for seniors to socialize and the City can work with the Heritage Museum as it could involve legacy. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. PUBLIC HEARINGS/GENERAL BUSINESS None. STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES 2 22-0983 Discussion and Consideration of Potential Study Issue: Feasibility of Converting the PG&E Land Near Greenwood Manor Park into a Dog Park Superintendent of Parks and Golf, Jim Stark, provided background and scope for the potential study issue to create a dog park at Greenwood Manor. Commissioner Kesting added that the Commission frequently speaks about needing more park space, and that this could be a solution. Additionally, the parcel of land is already fenced and PG&E is open to leasing the land. Commissioners inquired and staff responded: Will safety issues be looked into? Yes, as this is a dense neighborhood, traffic and safety impacts will be reviewed. Additionally, there will be public outreach meetings. Vice Chair Dibb opened for public comment: City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes - Final October 12, 2022 Chris F. noted that there are four houses directly adjacent to the park. Public safety is called frequently due to the noise, trash, alcohol and drug use. He feels that there would be significant downside to include a dog park at this location. Scott F., Michael W., Michael S., Stephanie H., and Elise L. supports the study issue. They noted that currently the City has 3 off-leash dog parks, but are very crowded. Thus, creating an additional dog park would resolve the supply and demand issue. Additionally, they noted that currently many patrons are allowing for their dogs to run loose at Cherry Chase Elementary field because there are no dog parks in that area. This will allow for kids to play at the school safely. Vice Chair Dibb closed public comment. Commissioner Kesting sponsored the study issue. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Commissioner Bremond informed the Commission that Washington Park Building will host a voting center. Commissioner Kesting noted that 21 members of the public attended today's meeting to discuss the potential study issue of creating a dog park at Greenwood Manor. Chair Giri encouraged staff and the public to attend the Diwali Festival at the Sunnyvale Community Center this weekend. -Staff Comments Jim Stark informed the Commission that Lakewood Park will be the next park to be renovated. An outreach meeting will be announced. Moreover, a dog park will likely be incorporated at Lakewood.
