City of Sunnyvale Meeting Minutes - Final Sustainability Commission Monday, April 19, 2021 7:00 PM Telepresence Meeting: City Web Stream CALL TO ORDER Pursuant to Section 3 of Executive Order N-29-20, issued by Governor Newsom on March 17, 2020, the meeting was conducted telephonically. Chair Wickham called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. via teleconference. ROLL CALL Present: 7 - Chair Kristel Wickham Vice Chair Douglas Kunz Commissioner Stephen Joesten Commissioner Shana Padgett Commissioner Bruce Paton Commissioner Murali Srinivasan Commissioner Tonya Veitch Council Liaison – Councilmember Fong (absent) Chair Wickham, Vice Chair Kunz, and all Commissioners attended via teleconference. PRESENTATION 21-0493 PRESENTATION - City Approaches to Resilience (Commissioner presentation) Commissioner Paton presented information on frameworks and strategies used by other cities to build resilience to climate change. Commissioners asked clarifying questions, and Commissioner Paton provided responses. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS Chair Wickham shared information regarding openings on the City’s Board and Commissions, including two upcoming openings on the Sustainability Commission. The motion carried by the following vote: Yes: 7 - Chair Wickham Vice Chair Kunz Commissioner Joesten Commissioner Padgett Commissioner Paton Commissioner Srinivasan Commissioner Veitch No: 0 STANDING ITEM: CONSIDERATION OF POTENTIAL STUDY ISSUES No new Study Issues were submitted. NON-AGENDA ITEMS & COMMENTS -Commissioner Comments Chair Wickham shared her experience attending the Gourmet Earth Week events to date. She encouraged Commissioners to attend upcoming Earth Week events. She reminded Commissioners that the last Sustainability Speaker Series event is on May 19, 2021, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Commissioner Veitch shared that the Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) is hosting a webinar on home energy on April 21 and 22, 2021, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. She also noted that Santa Clara County has an Earth Month webpage that includes links and resources to live sustainably. Vice Chair Kunz encouraged Commissioners to watch the March Sustainability Speaker Series event on decarbonizing transportation. He also noted that City Council had adopted a recommendation from staff on the Single Use Plastics ordinance strategy, which incorporated the Commission’s feedback from the public hearing in March. Vice Chair Kunz shared that the Mary Avenue Overcrossing project was on the City Council’s agenda for April 20, 2021, to kick off the Environmental Impact Report and define the scope of the project. City of Sunnyvale Page 2 Sustainability Commission Meeting Minutes - Final April 19, 2021 -Staff Comments Madeline Willett, Environmental Engineering Coordinator, shared dates and times for the remaining Earth Week events: Edible Gardening on April 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; Zero Wasty Very Tasty on April 22 from 5 to 6 p.m.; Compost That! workshop on April 23 from 12 to 2 p.m.; EV 101 on April 24 from 11 a.m. to noon; and Fix it Up Repair Café on April 24 from noon to 4 p.m. She noted that all events will be recorded and posted online. She also shared that the City’s Community Development Department (CDD) has developed an online electrical panel sizing tool as part of the Reach Codes program to assist residents and businesses in preparing their buildings to be ready for all-electric upgrades in the future.
