Currently the department has two opening we need to fill. After completing our interview process, some of our highest scoring candidates do not poses an EMT license as currently required at the time of hire. Each of them are currently enrolled in an EMT class with an anticipated completion in mid-May. Budget Considerations The budget considerations for the proposed hiring changes are negligible. Recommendation Waiting to make job offers until after the candidates complete their EMT may allow other departments that don’t require EMT at the time of hire, such as Duluth, to hire the best candidates. Additionally, we will be running our joint fire academy beginning on May 6th and making conditional job offers now will allow us to complete backgrounds, medical, and psychological evaluations in time to onboard the candidates prior to the start of this important training. I recommend the Police and Fire Commission allow the department to hire individuals who are currently enrolled in an EMT course.
