Sustainable Maryland Committee Meeting Minutes January 22, 2024 Attendance Dorothy Estrada Janet Owens Orissa Samaroo Jeremy Schwartz Emanuel Wagner Cindy Dyballa, Ward 2 Takoma Park City Council Guest: Melissa Klein The meeting was called to order at 7:16pm. The SMC adopted the minutes of January 8, 2024. Discussion (1) Cindy Dyballa attended the meeting as the City Council Liaison. She was appointed by the City Council to serve as a liaison between the Council and the SMD Committee. The Liaison serves to increase the connection between the Committee and the City Council but is not a voting member of the Committee. The role of Liaison will be reviewed in 6 months to determine its impact and effectiveness. a. Council Member Dyballa reviewed the City Council priorities with the Committee: i. Environmental sustainability is the overarching goal ii. Climate Change mitigation; Greenhouse gas resiliency iii. Manage natural resources of the community, largely trees b. Budget review – the expectation is that it will be tight; some key areas: i. Recreation center ii. Public space management plan iii. Implement Community Navigation Program iv. Improve Traffic Policies v. Environmental Sustainability – advancing electrification vi. Low income housing through public-private partnership (2) Draft Presentations for the City Council on proposed Sustainability Actions were delivered to the Committee  a. Janet Owens delivered a draft presentation to the Committee on food waste management and composting. b. Emanuel Wagner delivered a draft presentation on a proposal for installing fast EV chargers at multi-family buildings. c. The Committee members provided feedback to incorporate in a revised draft to the presenters. There will be one more draft presentation on February 5, 2024 before presenting to the City Council on February 7, 2024. The Committee adjourned at 8:30pm.
