CITY OF TALLMADGE RECREATION GOVERNING BOARD Minutes For July 29, 2021 Special Meeting @ 9:30 a.m. Rec Board Members In Attendance: Mayor Kline, Law Director Raber, Director of Finance Gilbride, Svs. Director Rorar, and Athletic Director Bill Johnson (5 voting members) Rec Center Staff Attending: Parks/Recreation Supt. Simons, Adm. Assistant Dan Enos Meeting Chaired By: Mayor Kline Minutes: Karen Morgan Call To Order and Approval of Minutes: The Mayor called the meeting to order and stated that the minutes from the July 8th meeting are not yet completed. New Business: New Program Proposal – E-sports Leagues - Simons: Our one new program proposal is for an E-sports League through a partnership with an organization called GG Leagues. They do this nationwide and if we contract with them, they will do basically everything for the League. They run it, monitor it and do the registration. There’s a good dashboard that we can see who registered so we can confirm that everything is correct when they do send us our check. We make 30% of all the money they bring in for the league. They have 4 different seasons, it’s a $30 half for each season. So each season I could sign up for the season and then I could play in the adult bracket of every single one of these leagues posted at the bottom of your handout. Right now they offer Madden Courtmate, Pocketmate? and Super Smash Brothers and they do this for youth, teen and adult divisions. So you can play in any of those for the $30 season pass, everything’s done online from the comfort of your own home. And I know that one of the things we were looking to avoid was to get kids out of the house but I think for a league-based program, this is actually a good way to go and it compliments the tournaments that we are running at Bounce as well as our plan to work with the University of Akron to offer some clinics during school breaks. This is just kind of a compliment to our E-sports package. I have talked with Mollie and Megan about some of the logistics in this program and we got those things ironed out so we’re just asking for your approval. Raber: I move to approve this new program; seconded by Johnson. Discussion: Mayor: So this is all online, I could sign up myself at home and the only way you get into the program is by signing up and then they give you a password to get into it? Simons: Yes, you go online and then we have our own landing page and we sign up for Tallmadge. There’s 5 or 6 other cities in Northeast Ohio who are also signed up with them so there will be kind of a Northeast Ohio league that will include, Tallmadge, Hudson, and others. Johnson: Is Twinsburg in it? Simons, Yes, Twinsburg and Orange I think. So you’ll play against them in the league. Johnson: So like the Tallmadge team league plays against the other cities? Simons: Yes. Johnson: What ages? Simons: There’s 3 divisions, 8-12, 13-18 and 18 and over. Johnson: If I wanted to see some information on this program, do you have any? Simons: Yes. Johnson: They’ve met 2 times a week for the last 3 weeks and he’s gotten 15 to 20 kids interested so if you contact him, you might get his kids into this and it might be something he’d like to do. Simons: Randy has been in touch with him and we have another tournament coming up in September that Randy has been talking to him about. Johnson: Good! Vote to approve: 5/0.
