CITY OF TALLMADGE RECREATION GOVERNING BOARD Minutes For February 7, 2022 Meeting At 10:30 a.m. Rec Board Members In Attendance: Law Director Raber, Finance Director Gilbride, Public Service Director Rorar, School Rep Manion, Community Member Salerno (5 Voting Members)* Non-Voting Members: Parks and Rec Superintendent Simons Meeting Chaired By: Finance Director Gilbride Minutes: Patti Gaffney Call To Order and Approval of Minutes: Finance Director Gilbride called the meeting to order. Raber moved to approve the minutes of the January 6, 2022 meeting; seconded by Mark Salerno. Vote to approve: 5/0. Old Business: Past Event Updates: Simons: Our biggest one, Community All Star Basketball, is over. We are very happy that the season is done. It went as well as it possibly could have between parents getting in fights and getting suspended and the season carrying in one weekend longer than normal, so we have some changes to make for next year. But overall, it was nice to be back, and I think we’ll be able to attract more teams next year based on the differences between our league and the league that everyone else has been playing in the last two years. Rorar: Now you’ve seen an uptick in aggression and people being upset throughout the Rec, right? Simons: Yes, not just this league. Rorar: Are you guys seeing anything at the schools? Manion: It depends on the group. Some of our groups, yes, but other groups are really good right now, too. So, pretty typical I’d say from what we’re seeing. Rorar: And we’re not typical; this is more than normal, right? Simons: It just seems to us that, in general, with memberships and leagues, people are a little angrier and a little quicker to lash out. It was true for Community All Stars, but it is true for memberships as well. Rorar: Thank you. Staff Updates: Simons: Our big staff update is that with the hiring grid being passed by Council, we did offer a position of Assistant Parks and Recreation Manager to Dan Enos. He accepted that so he will now be filling that role. He’ll mainly be in charge of Operations of the Rec Center and then still handle most of the H/R, Purchasing and those types of duties he’s got. And then we are currently accepting applications and resumés for the other Assistant Parks and Recreation Manager position. That position would be in charge of maintenance, the pool and sports, for the most part. That job does close on February 18th and we hope to have it filled by mid- March. Rorar: I’d like to say that I think Dan has done a great job in the past year filling in that role. He wasn’t given that, but he definitely has picked up the reins. Prior to that he’s done a great job. He’s been subbing pretty good. Simons: I would agree with that. Today he told me he thinks he should do more because he now has this new title. I told him ‘no, you are doing more than enough already’. I think that’s going to be an excellent addition.  2 New Business: Price Changes - Tennis: Simons: The only new business we have here is changing the price of tennis. And that’s really just with regards to their staffing costs going up as we’ve seen with several other programs. It’s really just a $5.00 price increase across the board, nothing too major. Raber: They went up last year too, didn’t they? Simons: They changed last year to offer three-week sessions instead of four-week sessions. That was the change we had last year. Raber: So this is $50 for three-weeks? Simons: Yes, $50 for three-weeks. Gilbride: What’s the split on this? Simons: 70-30. Raber: Move to approve. Rorar: Second. Gilbride: There’s been a motion to approve and second the changes as presented for the tennis lessons. Vote to approve: 5/0. Other: Gilbride: Is there anything else to be added? Simons: No Monthly Reports: TRC Membership Report: Simons: (Hands out report to members) Finally, some good news on the membership report here. Our memberships are up a great deal and what is really nice to see, in my opinion, is that our non-insurance-based memberships are up over 50% from January of last year. We always expect to see an increase in the insurance-based memberships after the first of the year as people become eligible for Silver Sneakers and the other insurance-based programs. So that one we expect to increase, but it’s nice to see the increase in the non-insurance-based memberships as well. That means that our paid members are coming back into the building. And it really is across the board, both annual and monthly, blue and gold. So those are all good things to see. Just a membership note with that, I will say Tuesday of last week we did have a new class start. It was somebody who was previously teaching over with the Kent Parks & Rec Dept before they shut down on all their classes. Her class has such a following that we have sold several memberships that Tuesday to people who are coming in to take the class and then a couple of 7-day memberships as well. So, it seems that she is bringing a following from Kent which is nice to see. Rorar: What is the class? Simons: It is called “Tone Every Zone”. It is some sort of toning class. In January, our average daily visits were up to 635/day. So far in February, they are 640/day. The biggest increase for that is really in Daily Admission Passes, especially on the weekends. This past Saturday, we had over 150 people in on Day Passes. So, it’s really great to see that, and we expect to see those numbers to continue to increase now that Community All Stars is over and people will be coming in to play more pickup basketball and what not. TRC Financial Report: Gilbride: (Did not bring report to hand out.) We did have a good January, just like Jessica’s membership report is showing, revenues are up. We had a really good January. Our net operating loss was only $700, approximately. Rorar: Wow! Gilbride: We are seeing that comeback with Community All Stars and that operating this year. So, hopefully we’ll continue to see that positive trend. I will email that out to all the members, I apologize. TRC Donation Request Report: Simons: There were none to report.
